AL FRIDAY, MAY 10,1946
- Diva May. Skin Repo in in Menotti Crara
‘By ROBERT RICHARDS United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, May 10.—Dark-eyed Gian-Carlo Menotti cracked traditional opera in the ribs today. He said!that Americans ought to do something fast to pep it up. Manhattan critics were still singing the praises of His new chamber
opera, “The Medium,” which was|.
produced Wedhesday night at the Brander Matthews hall, but Mr, Menotti said rather sadly, “Wait until they see my new one to be called “The Last Superman.” Mr. Menotti, who came to the United States from Italy in 1034, will write the superman opus on a! Guggenheim fellowship, and’ he means to blaze new trails for opera that might make Verdi or Wagner swallow their tongues, if they gazed down from the Met's diamond horseshoe. “It’s high time that opera, keeping pace with other art forms, grew up and took its place in a modern world,” Mr. Menotti explained. “We are still staging Rigoletto, even at the Met, just the way it was staged the first time that it was performed.”

Mr, Menotti has a revolutiopary. idea—he wants to.hire singers who also can act, Ang in Mr. Menotti’s operas singers will perform with their backs to the audience, lying down on the floor, playing cards or even skipping’ rope—if a situation arises which requires it. “They will be natural,” Mr. Menotti said. “That is the most important thing. They will sing, yes, but they will also act a part and not be just so much ‘dead wood on the stage.” 2 All of Mr. Menotti's operas are | sung in~English,~but he finds it |difficult to find singers who can handle the roles. “Americans just can't sing in English,” he said, “Myself, I don't understand it. His lat¥st opera “The Medium” is built around a mute, It hds a love song duet sung only by one person. ple “It's a duet fust the same,” Mr. Menotti, said. “The mute contrib utes by making motions with his hatids.” In “The Last Superman,” Mr. Menotti will tell the sad story of a poor native " India who is trapped by an American cafe society gal. This lady thinks that the native is a superman and she brings him back to the local bistros for all the babes to see. “Alas, it happens all the time,” Menotti said, with a sigh. “They may not be Indians, but you see these poor boys led by their women in every night club.” In fact, he thinks it's impossible
and not slip into such pitfalls. “Even’ 1,” he said. “Yes, I see it coming.” But before the gals pull him down, he's going to get at least one more opera, off his chest, And he hopes that it'll shake the
