He sald it would be necessary to continue selective service indefinitely—perhaps for three years. In seven months, Gen. Gilbert reported, § the army has recruited 737,144
maintained by any country at
$105,000 Each Month
Since October, the army has obtained arr average of 105,000 new| soldiers each month, May and June are expected to produce between 250,000 and 300,-|} 000 new men, drawn largely from high school graduating classes. Gen. Gilbert said surveys indicate 25 per cent of senior class boys plan to enlist this summer. There | is reason to hope, he said, that! 17-and 18-year-old enlistments will “run even higher,” particularly if congress approves a pay raise bill] now pending. Fill Gap With Draftees The war department's minimum requirements are 1550000 men. Thus, even if a million volunteers are obtained this year, the army | will be 550,000 men short. Gen. | Gilbert said this gap must be filled |
by draftees. Abandonment of the. draft, he said, would also mean that thousands now expected to enlist would change their plans. If the army is able to maintain | the recruiting pace it has estab-| lished, Gen. Gilbert said, the 1947! draft quota will probably be only 50,000 men. |
