The first public plea for a national Mother's day was made here 42 years ago by Frank Hering, then 4 professor at Notre Dame, before a meeting of Indianapolis Eagles, In 1912 the Order of Eagles enacted a statute which provided for observance of a Mother's day by local lodges, two years before congress set aside the second Sunday in May for the national observance. The May date had been advocated by Miss Ann Mae Jarvis of Philadelphia who also urged the wearing of the carnation, her mother’s
