~ MARINE CHIEF RAPS MERGER
‘Gen. Vandergrift Charges Eisenhower ‘Plot.”
: By Seripps-Howard Newspapers - WASHINGTON, May 9. — Gen. A. A, Vandegrift, marine corps commandant, has charged that Gen.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, army chief of staff, intends to “reduce the marine corps to a position of studied military ineffectiveness” - if the service forces are merged, it was learned today. In an executive session of the
Ambulance Equipment and Trained Personnel
_|senate naval affairs committee, it
was reported Gen. Vandegrift charged that Gen, Eisenhower has sponsored plans to “destroy the corps.” It was learned that Gen, Vandegrift produced copies of what he described as a secret memorandum from Gen. Eisenhower to the joint chiefs of staff, proposing to reduce the marine corps to “no more than one regiment” with miscellaneous troops for interior guard duty at naval stations.” A regiment usually consist of about 3000 men, During the war the marines had six combat divisions and three air wings—a total strength of 500,000. In any future war, the marines would be used to unload supplies and guard dumps, Gen, Vandegrift charged. Before he saw the purported Eisenhower memo, Gen, Vandegrift was reported to have planned to make no stronger anti-merger statement than those of Secretary of the Navy Forrestal and Adm. Nimits. But after he saw the memo, the general rewrote his statement
open,” it was learned.
