Social Security In Marriages Is Suggested
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer - WHY DO WIVES nag? A Greenville, Ténn,, reader says it's because they have no sense of security in marriage. She cites a case. A woman has been married for 15 years to a man who prospered. She gave up a promising job, She helped him succeed and has borne him three. children, Now he wants a divorce because he is in love with a young redhead. If she grants’it the wife will be forced to live on, his alimony or take a low-paid job. All of which causes our correspondent to comment: “In what other partnership could one person step out and take most of the profits of the enterprise. What union man would give up 25 years’ senior= ity because a person came along ‘whom the boss thought more charming? It seems to me we women should stick together and demand some kind of social security in our marriages.”
» - ” THIS IS pertinent and sensible— but another question arises. What kind of security? Unless we forbid divorce, there seems little {chance for improvement, If marriage could be managed according {to the rules set up for business cor'porations, all would be easy sailing | But we have to face the fact that there's rarely justice in any human relationship. Men who have to keep their noses to the grindstone to provide alimony for idle wives are also victims of injustice. Everywhere you turn there is evidence of wrong treatment, in some cases for the wives, in others for the husbands. ; I've never known a marriage that worked on a strictly 50-50 basis, although we strive constantly for such an arrangement. . In matters of the heart, co sorrows in marriage are part of the sorrows of life, and it is clear
that when we move to protect one group by law some other group is persecuted. It seems to me that educaiion for responsibility is the only way before us for improving family life,
