~ FIGHT ON MACHINE

Candidate for. Prosecutor itor Warns ‘Ma Manipulators’ Consider Themselves ‘Above Law’ in Primary. The Republican machine “manipulators are considering themselves

above the law in this primary,” dec

lared Judge Judson L. Stark, candi-

date for the G. O. P. prosecutor nomination, in a speech before a group of war veterans at the Hickman auto sales poom last night. “We have reached the point in Mari6n county politics when the system for conducting the primary as-prescribed by law is thrown aside

by a few machine manipulators,” he said. “It is high time all of us took an interest in this primary to defeat dictatorship and machine rule so we may enjoy here at home some of the democracy and freedom which we fought for in both world war 1 and world war IL” He renewed his attack against Henry E. Ostrom, county Republican chairman and James L. Bradford, former county. chairman. Points to Bradford “The person who really is directing the machine's primary campaign is liquor~baron Bradford who is talting time out from the operation of his Mid-State Liquor Co. to make up the slate and prepare to put over his candidates - for the key offices which he must hold or lose control,” Judge Stark said. «I am reliably informed that in making up the slate: the bosses did not consult the ward chairmen or precinct committeemen. 1 am informed the bosses did not even consult their treasurer, Edwin K. Steers Sr. “We also have seen how George K. Johnson, the duly elected secretary of the county committee, was set aside by the bosses and his place taken by George Heiny, an investigator from Prosecutor Sherwood Blue's office. Mr. Heiny is in charge of the regular Republican headquarters which should be going forward under the supervision of Mr. Johnson.”

Court Group Indorses Harold N. Fields

The Juvenile Court Committee, in a series ‘of meetings this week, launched its final push for the nomination of Harold N. Fields for

the Juvenile court judgeship on the Republican ticket. The committee also has indorsed _ Joseph O, Hoffman, Democrat, who is unoppose for the nomination. “We are now at the point near the time that the Juvenile court can be lifted out of politics and be handled as the serious agency it should be,” declared Mrs. Austin Clifford, member of the committee. “Both Mr. Fields and Mr, Hoflman are pledged to non-partisan administration of the court. If either is elected it is assured that the court's record level will be raised to where it should be,” she said.

Clark, {rival candidate for the G. O.-P. | prosecutor post. John M, Miller, attorney and member of the Marion County Re- | publican Veterans of World war II {which is backfng Mr. Clark, said Judge Stark is hurting the name of the Republican party. “The fair-name of the Republican 'party is of greater importance than the success or failure of any candidate in the primary next Tuesday,” {he said. Says He Objects to . Abus? «Judge Stark has spent most of his adult life in public office or in pursuit thereof, In this I see nothing to his discredit. What I do object to is his abuse of other Republicans who take an interest in public affairs. To him (Judge Stark) they age all bosses or political ward heelers, excepting, of course, those
