two, three.” They could, at that. This happens to be the opinion of one of the great trainers of all time. . I sat with him and his wife and watched the running of yesterday's races. He asked me not to quote him. What he said was this: «If 1 was going to make a bet, even if I wasn't going to bet and I just had my choice of any horse 1 would try to win the Derby with, it would be Lord well. And there's nothing wrong with Arden’s other horses. Knockdown will be close, and so will, what's his name, that ‘Perfect Bahram. They might even run one, two, three.” This parsicular trainer has won

»

“They may even run one,

more than one Derby. He is an old friend of mine. Four times he had picked the Derby for me on the nose. Twice he’s picked all three of the horses in the money. Once he picked his own horse Yo run second. “We can't beat this horse,” he sald (and he named the horse) “but we will be right back of him at the finish.” And ‘that's what happened. He didn't beat the horse he mentioned, but he was second. Later in the summer his horse won some mighty big purses. As it turned out, and as this trainer friend of mine knew so well, the horse wasn't quite ready for the Derby. This year he scratched his horse. =

Now ‘there is no law against a stable running one, two, three, in a big race. It hasn't been done often but it is not without precedent. The Calumet stable, owned by Warren Wright, and trained by Ben Jones, has turned the trick twice in recent years, I think it was in 41 that “Calumet won the. Arlington Futurity one, two, three, with Sun Again, Some Chance and Wish Bone. I disremember the year the stable won ‘the Princess Pat sprint for fillies in the same manner with Good Blood, Twosey and Thine but anyway that's the way they finished, one, two, three. 8o it could happen S|down here Saturday for Arden. But with all deference to my trainer friend, I must report he is on the minority side. This is still a wide open race. On form, Lord Boswell is the horse to beat, but until he wins we can't be sure. The one thing that makes horse racing exciting is that you never can be sure, How about Man 0’ War? They beat

Worlds Tonight

Jonnay Denson, Indianapolis mauler, will attempt to punch his

the former state champion tangles with Clayton Worlds, Chicago, in a 10-round main event duel. Both Denson and Willard Reed, current Indiana heavyweight titleholder, have met Worlds in previous bouts, and Denson’s showing against the Windy City belter was by far the best. Worlds hammered out a lop-sided 10-round verdict over Reed here recently, but had more trouble with Denson when they collided March 18 at St. Paul. The Chicagoan survived a ninecqunt second-round knockdown to

split verdict after 10 heats of close milling. The complete card follows: Main event, 10 rounds, heavyweights — Clayton Worlds, 194, Chicago, IIL 4s. Johnny Denson, 200, Indianapolis. : Trainer Friend Says Maine Chance Entry, but Williams Rides With Hampden

By JOE WILLIAMS Soripps-Howard Staff Writer LOUISVILLE, May 3.—A week ago, just yesterday in: fact, they were saying the. Derby is a wide open race. Today it is different. The race now is conceded to the perfume princess of New York, Elizabeth Arden Graham. Apparently she’s. going to start three of her Maine Chance barn occupants, Lord Boswell, Knockdown and Perfect Bahram, : “How can you beat ‘'em?” you are asked.

As has been disclosed, I know litle about Hampden. And as a sports writer I don’t .feél too apologetic about my ignorance. After all, there are hundreds and hundreds of horses which are just starting out. “I was sure you-didn’t know about Hampden,” went on Mr. Purner. “And that’s why I asked the question.” Then he went on to tell me what the horse had been doing, how he had run, how he had worked, and how he had been beaten. This impressed me most of .all—how the

he couldn't make it. But you know how it is in any race. You can’t make your horse stop on a dime. I mean your horse must. keep on running at his normal speed for several seconds ‘or so, That was the case in this race, and all of a sudden I looked up and Hampden, after crossing the wire, was fifteen lengths
