‘Destruction Of Marriage

Is Senseless’

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON * Soripps-Howard Staff Writer

FIFTY THOUSAND divorce suits have been filed in one county in Oklahoma. How incredible that would have sounded to the pioneers who came west in covered wagons! Certainly the women of that era were smart enough to understand that marriage was their protection. Today's most terrible evidence of feminine stupidity is the sight of modern women deliberately tearing

{down that which was so painfully

built through the ages to safeguard them and their children. Have we women lost our wits? It must be, or feminine groups would use their” influence on the side of common sense to stop the senseless destruction of family life in the United States, It is not only the individual who is affected by divorce, it is the institution of marriage. . ® - »

AND WHAT DO WE intend to substitute for that institution? What's ahead for America, if women refuse to look at facts? Monogamous marriage, you know, was an evolutionary process, It took centuries to perfect it. Men didn't submit to domestic taming with <ood grace. And the primary purpose of all marriage conventions is to protect mothers and children. All savage tribes recognized the need for a syctem that would guarantee to the young some kind of family life. Wise men in every age ed. that the national welfare deperided upon family stability. And every civilization that has fallen began to disintegrate when its matrimonial codes were ignored. Sometimes I have a feeling that we women who are busy saving the world would do well to turn our attention to saving marriage here at home. What will we have left when it is gone?
