woodwinds, which probably did a lot to jack up 18th-century wood-wind-playing ‘standards. . But “Tannhaeuser” is still a long. way from the phony profundity and interminably unresolved dissonances of the Ring. It's Wagner, you might say, before he became a pre-Nazi.

Met's Music-Drama The Metropolitan's “Tannhaeuser” as music is one thing. The Metropolitan's “Tannhaeuser” as music-drama is another. Paul Henry Lang, Columbia university’s distinguished musical historian, writing in a recent issue of the Saturday Review of Literature, took the Metropolitan to task. The music, Prof. Lang said, is fine. The drama is wooden and out of date.

Somebody lent me, as a curiosity, the 1912 edition of the “Victor | Book of the Opera.” Sure enough, for just one example, the ‘“teure Halle” (great hall of the Wartburg) {which Miss Traubel gloriously | hailed last night, is depicted on | page 326 as identieal with the set used at I. Scenery Atrocious Like all the Wagnerian scenery | Ive ever seen in the Metropolitan, ttonically bad taste — what the Germans themselves call “Kitsch.” So are the costumes—heavy and brocady, like Fifth ave. mansion parlor curtains. 80 is the acting. This business of arms half raised, like the beginning of army calisthenics, to express passion—“Das geht nicht.” Certainly it doesn’t go with the music. And it isn't necessary. But the Metropolitan (read Irving Kolodin's history of the old opry house) has been hamstrung by benefactors, trustees, boxholders and the rest of the prestige-ahd-money crew. They've got the singers; they've got the orchestra—
