ered a final blow. This time the sportsman lay quietly with his mouth sagging open. . Mona shuddered and not altogether with horror. She had felt a thrill of primitive joy at the clean, masculine siehgth of Mie O'Brien. » “OH,” she Hare, wonderful.” He picked up the pistol Russel had dropped and telephoned for the police before he answered, “I'm sorry I"can’t say as much for you. No use to ask what you were doing here because I know. = You--obvi< ously couldn't resist the bait put out in the papers.” Meekly she held out the little book which had so nearly cost her own life. “1 found this, Mike. It's her diary. I found it in & lingerie case.” Mike said grimly, “You're telling me. I'm the ong who put it there.”
"youre
» ” » “YOU?” she gasped. “But why?” “Because that's where it was found in the first place” Mona was completely bewildered. “But I don’t understand. The papers said that’s what you were looking for..." “That was to lure the murderer back to Jean’s apartment,” he said. “It's a long story, Mona, and {1 haven't time to go into it now. It's all there in her ‘diary only she didn't give his name.” » » ” “BUT why did you put it back there? If someone else had found it you would have lost your evidence.” “Not with a photostatic copy of! the incriminating pages filled away in my office,” Mike replied, looking bored. “Look, Mona, would you mind getting out of here now before the police come?” “But Mike, how does this prove anything gbout Russel?” “You can read all about it in the papers tomorrow,” he answered. “May I keep the diary? After: all I found it.” » » ” “NO, you may not. Give it to me.” “If I refuse, I suppose YOU'LL €hoke me,” she said complying. Mike cast a glance at the figure sprawled on the floor. “I have my hands full at the moment, but I'll tell you this much. Your boy friend will be released immediately.” “Mike, you mean that? Are you sure?” “Quite sure,” he said, and for an instant she thought his face was the saddest, kindest face she had | ever seen—then he put on his customary self-made expression. “Russel Bretherton killed Jean Roberts, and not for love,” Mike explained. “So Jay will be out of jail before you get home.” » » » AS MONA left the apartment, she found herself less joyous over Jay's release than she was concerned about Russel, She had never liked Russel, but she couldn't imagine him shooting anyone. Yet the light of murder had been in his eyes. He had looked like a madman. Perhaps he was insane. Yet he was so kind to his horses and dogs. Why even last Sunday, the day after Jean had been killed, Wong had told her Russel couldn't come over because of a sick horse. Why would he want to kill Jean if it were not for love? What other reason could there be? » # ® MONA remembered the night she had gone to a dinner party at Russel’s home in Carmel Valley. Someone had called on the telephone insisting that he « come to the city.

She h suspec it was a woman although R 1 was not the type to: make the long drive into San- Franeisco for any woman, Maybe it was Jean Roberts who called him. But why? And what did Wong have to do with it? » » ” * WONG HAD announced the day after the murder that he was ready to leave, that he wanted to change places . She had seen Wong following Mike the night he returned to his office to keep an appointment. ‘| Wong hated Russel. She was sure of that now. Undoubtedly he had given Mike the tip that he needed. Yet her main question was still unanswered. min si Russel Bretherton kill Jean Roberts if he were not emotionally involved with her?
