bringing her something and most of the perfume she liked best he had given her. There were bottles of every kind and shape from Mexico, Tahiti, South America and one wooden container carved like a flower. That was pikaki from Hawaii. It was Mona's favorite and Jean Roberts must have liked it, too, since she had drenched her handkerchief in it before going to Jay's apartment. ” ” »

THERE WAS something infinitely pathetic about that perfumed handkerchief which had been found beside the dead girl. It didn't seem to belong with the rest of her expensive clothes. It was just a plain bit of linen with no decoration of any kind, To Mona it seemed as incongruous as the desperation in the girl's shallow eyes, Would she ever be able to forget it? Could she ever forget the despair in his wife's voice when she answered the telephone? What was Edith Cameron thinking now? Would she rally to his defense and want to return to him? Would Jay accept such an offer if it were made? » # »
