FRANCE TO VOTE ON NEW CONSTITUTION
PARIS, April 20 (U. P).—The left-wing constitution of the Fourth Republic was laid before the voters
of France today for approval, with! : p
the nation deeply divided on the basic issue. A popular referendum on May 5 will decide by a simple majority vote whether France will be governed by a single-chamber assembly with a figurehead president. The constituent assembly adopted the constitution in a tense session last night by the narrow margin of 309 to 240. Communists and Socialists, the two big left-wing parties, voted solidly for it, while the more conservative popular republicans and. the right-wing parties opposed it.
