PLAN $4 MILLION COLUMBUS TOMB
Dominican Republic, Catholic Church Leaders Anxious To Start Project at Santo Domingo.
By JOHN A. THALE $
Times Foreign
Correspondent
CIUDAD TRUJILLO, Dominican Republic, April 19.—The Dominican government and Catholic church leaders are anxious to get started building a $4,000,000 tomb for what they are convinced are the true remains of the man who discovered the new world. All that is mortal of Christopher Columbus now rests in comparatively modest and obscure circumstances in the ancient cathedral of
Santo Domingo here. The Dominicans are unperturbed by the existence of purported re- , mains of Columbus in a couple of other spots in the world. An altar-like monument, some 2 feet high, stands just inside the doorway of the cathedral here, supported by four marble

area three.or four steps below the level of the church floor, stands a marble base, On it is a bronzed chest, some three feet long, two feet wide and two or two and one-half feet deep. On the handle at the front of the chest is embossed only the date, “1492.” Visitors, standing in the dim, vaulted emptiness with the ordinary street noises of a Latin American city echoing hollowly in their ears, find it a little hard to realize that here is the end of the road for the man who traveled so far. What is planned as a replacement for this simple setting is a huge “Faro A Colon,” or Columbus memorial lighthouse, in the form of a Jo. aytw, mile-long cross of granSuperimposed on the main cross will be a cross composed of batteries of searchlights, to project a blazing cross into the sky by night. The memorial will be built in a 2000-acre park just outside the city. Expect K. of CO. Support Archbishop Ricardo Pittini, the wise, gentle and kindly bishop of the oldest Catholic See in the new world, Santo Domingo, has written President Truman in behalf of the project. The late President Roosevelt, with whom the archbishop conferred while in the United States, was listed as a strong supporter of the lighthouse project. Archbishop Pittini said also that
the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic men's organization in the United States, -is expected to lend strong support. All the 21 Pan-American Republics are expected to co-operate in the project. Officials of the Dominican republic and other Latin American countries have received pledges of co-operation from the United Nations general assembly, the Pan-American union, and other groups. Architect Is Waiting Dominican leaders hope to get started within: a few months on the four or five-year construction Job. J. L. Gleave, the Edinburgh, Scotland, architect who won the international competition for the design of the monument, is reported walting in London, “with his suitcases in his hand,” for final signing of the contract that will pay him $160,000 for supervising the construction, The tomb has been a dream of Dominicans for nearly 25 years. They look jealously to their gountry’s claim to the title, “the land Columbus loved the most.” Backing that claim, they point out that history tends to show it was a case of love at first sight when Columbus discovered Santo Domingo early in December 1492. Gave King Bronx Cheer They cite historical records to indicate that thereafter the great discoverer spent more of his time dallying in Domingo than he did in discovering new lands for the greater honor and glory of Spain. On his fourth and last voyage the explorer seems to have been operating under direct orders to stay away Irom Santo Domingo entirely. But the records show that once out of sight of land Columbus may have given his royal patrons the fifteenth century equivalent of a bronx cheer and set his course straight for his beloved isle.

RAPS CONTROL OF TEXTILES
Gen. Erskine D emands Clothing Material Diversion.
By JIM G. LUCAS Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, April 10.— Thousands of veterans have been unable to buy suits because material which should be set aside for them is being diverted to sofa pillows and women's dresses. This was charged yesterday by Maj. Gen, G. B. Er-. |} skine, direetor of retraining and reemployment, Gen, Erskine demanded, ‘‘an end to halfway measures.” His statement apparently was aimed } at civilian produc- - tion administra- Mr Lucas tor John Small, from whose textile branch Gen, Erskine said he “has
been unable to obtain a satisfactory |]
explanation” of:the suit shortage. Although Maj. Herbert Rose, civ~ ilian production textile director, promised on March 290 to produce recommended controls in men’s clothing, n. Erskine said delivery repeatedly been postponed. Long Dispute Maj. Rose explained that controls “can't be pulled out of a hat.” “I am looking into the. entire men’s clothing picture,” he said. “The veterans angle does not concern me. That's Gen, Erskine's worry.” A behind-scenes dispute over veterans clothing has gone on between Gen. Erskine and the civilian production administrator since December, when he warned Reconversion Director John Snyder that veterans would find stocks depleted unless priorities were established. The CPA statistical division, on at least one occasion, refused to supply information requested by members of Gen. Erskine's staff. An order approved by Maj. Rose channeling more suits to veterans was killed after it reached Mr. Small’s desk. Production Behind Schedule Gen. Erskine indicated he had little confidence in the production agency's predictions that men’s clothing shortage will ease in 90 days. He contended that February suit production was behind schedule, and that “none of the problems confronting the industry has been solved.” He said “several hundred thousand” suits are being kept off the
market because tailors cannot ob-

recent OPA order releasing restric- |. tions on sofa pillows, he sald, caused diversion of ‘two million yards of lining—sufficient for 750,000 suits—to that field. “Pocket - material also is being diverted,” Harold Gubin, assistant administrator declared, “We don’t
know where it is going, but we intend to learn.”

, Apsil 19 —Here are some questions from veterans regarding apprentice training and other G. IL benefits: QI am a veteran who is conering becoming an apprentice. Would the government make up the difference between my pay as an apprentice and a journeyman'’s pay? A~You can get regular apprentioe pay, plus a subsistence pay, from the government. If the total apprentice pay and subsistence equals or exceeds the rate of pay for the job for which you are being trained, however, the amount of government subsistence is reduced accordingly. Q-I am interested in taking an apprentice course. But I think I should also take some academic subjects, Will the government pay for both at the same time?
