Mrs. Frederic Eichorn, Frederic J. and Peggy take on last-minute chow at Ft. Hamilton before boarding ship to join their husband-

Times Special : NEW YORK, April 19.—~Among the families of servicemen sailing
yesterday to join their husbands and dads overseas were Hoosier wives, Mrs, Frederic Eithorn, formerly of Indianapolis, and Mary A. Orr of
Evansville.
Both are headed for Vienna—Mrs. Eichorn accompanied by her|them. Now we hope decent young two children, Frederic Jr. and Peggy—where their husbands are sta-
tioned. Mrs. Orr, wife of Pfc. Robert Orr of Evansville, was the youngest wife among the 350 persons who boarded the army transport Thomas H. Barry yesterday morning—she's 16. Appropriately clad in a new coat of dazzling white paint, the once gray, grim troop carrier hoisted | anchor at Pier 84, North river, at 2 p. m. and sailed for Bremerhaven, Germany.
The Barry's passengers were the first contingent of some 30,000 G. L

Ee THE. INDIANA? DEVIL'S ISLAND "SEEKS REFORM)
French Would Like Better Class of ‘Settlers.
PARIS, April 19 (U. P.)~Devil'’s Island, notorious penal colony off French Guiana, today is an abandoned collection of barracks waiting for colonizers. The last 30 convicts have been removed to the mainland, a colonial ministry “official reported. There, with some 850 jailbirds, they are awaiting transportation back to | France. The ministry has appropriated 3,000,000 francs for their return. Meanwhile, the ministry wants to erase the bad name which the penal settlements have given its South American colony. “Nobody would settle in Guiana because of its horror reputation,” a ministry spokesman said. “At the end of the last century we decided to send convicts there in the hope they would build up .the place.” “But we admit failure. They were not good types and the regime they suffered did nothing to improve
Frenchmen will settle there.”
