Ho Times Foreign Correspondent SHANGHAI, China, April 18.—
The problems of living in Shanghai today are mirrored most effectively, perhaps, in the want ads of English language newspapers. Some of the most poignant wants are expressed by lonely hearts in the personal columns, “Young lady, just arrived in Shanghai, very lonely and with no acquaintances, wishes to meet young gentleman, civilian or American officer (not refugee), for outings and friendship. Box 4179.” “Young lady, 30, wishes to make acquaintance of . American military or civilian. Friendship, eventually matrimony, reply box 4147.” : While females predominate in this type of public pursuit identifying themselves as “Russian ladies,” males by no means are averse to trying. an ad when all else fails. Wants Chinese Woman ) “Foreign gentleman, 46, wishes to meet attractive Chinese lady with view to friendship. Reply with photo. Confidence assured. Box 4145.” Sometimes the goal is expressed with more subtlety, as a desire to “exchange languages” or share common interest in “bicycle rides and | country walks.” | Once it was “the girl in the white copt wishes to thank the three sailors, one of whom is named Jim, for a lovely basket of flowers presented to her on Wednesday evening. She has forgotten to do so, being dumb-stricken. No doubt the gift was prompted by the spring.” But all is not tra la-in-the-spring stuff. Sometimes he-man adventure beckons from the want ad pages. “Here is an opportunity for real hunters, I would like live persons who are real hunters to accompany me to cate to catch and kill a tiger which

Olsson, 35, Swedish merchant seaman who was found dead in a freight car near Duro, Ill Coroner C. C. No cowards need apply. of & Nylons Arrive Sometimes there is good news for the ladies—if they are sufficiently wealthy. “Just arrived, Du Pont nylon stockings, 51-gauge, for sale at 35 U. 8, dollars per pair.” Desperate house hunters some- | times come out with a rental offer they hope will bring results. “Owner of the well known Shang- | hai fashion concern wants to rent unfurnished house, four to six rooms. Willing to pay 400 U. 8/ dollars rent per month.” Practically every drug store in| Shanghai keeps a daily ad in the paper§ promising, “highest prices paid for penicillin, sulfadizine, multi-vitamin haliveroil, atabrine,| sulfathiazole, sulfapyridine, sulfa-| guanidine, saccharine, quinine and | any kind of drugs.”
