Writer Pays Tribute To Women Gardeners

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer SPRING HAS crept in on tiptoe. One day the trees were spectral in their branches; the next, every little twig was edged with a fuzz of yellowish green. Suddenly you are aware of a great change—in the earth, in the air, and in the way people look. It's the season when men and women come out of their houses and start to dig in the earth. I love to watch them, flihough I've * never had much of a’desire to-dig myself, nothing gives me more pleasure than to see other people at it. I know what I've missed because there is something in their faces which belies their talk about how hard the work is. Members of our garden clubs never really leave off digging of course, but in the spring they seem filled with a more compelling urge. The gardens they create are things bf beauty. » » » LOUIS BROMFIELD says that these women know a great deal more about soil and even agriculture than many second-rate farmers. They have the brains, the energy, the persistence, the love of earth and an ever-present dream of beauty which makes them a | powerful force in and for the land. | What we owe to our feminine | gardeners nobody can‘ estimate. Given a little plot .of earth, they can work miracles. ‘Nowadays when there is such | great need for food, many of those who once toiled only with flowers | are working with vegetables. Their {donations to a hungry world are {not insignificdnt. | Anyway, while they dig and T ean |watch them, the cares of life are | forgotten. Especially in the spring, I thank God that I live in a place where there is still room for gardens.
