BLOCK 6. 0. P.

Clo Acts to Stop Repub- ~ licans in Fall Elections.

By CHARLES E, HERROLD United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 17.— The C.1.0. political action committee

set out today to block the Republican drive to capture control of the house of representatives in the November elections.

C.0.P.-P.A.C,

that a G.O.P. victory would be i. “a very bad thing for the country.” The ' Republicans would have to pick up 27 new house seats to upset Democratic control, Mr. Hillman “op Hillman told a news conference last night that “it is impossible to believe that

the Republican party is going pro-

| gressive.” He said the P. A, C. “will

certainly support good Republicans” but will “seek the defeat of the coalition of poll-tax Democrats and reactionary Republicans.” The standard by which P.A.C. will judge “good Republicans” is their record in a 17-point legislative program adopted at a meeting of the P,A.C.. executive committee here. P. A.C. called for support of candidates who will work for fulfillment of .its program. It will seek defeat of all others, Congressional Districts Mr. Hillman said P. A. C. expected to be the factor in holding or winning 100 congressional districts this year.

Colorado, Idaho, Oklahoma and Massachusetts, one each. These districts are now repre-

STARKVILLE, Miss., April 17 (U. P.).—Reaction to Billy Rose's “beautiful - lasses - don’t-attend-classes” remarks today threatened to equal the resentment that followed the last decade's flip classic, “men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses.” The New York night club impresario—asked to choose the loveliest girls at Mississippi State campus here for the college year book— tartly wrote college editor Morton Sackheim that he found a decided lack of pulchritude in the lot. His conclusion that “beautiful girls don't go to college,” and implications that they go to the dia~ mond horseshoe instead, set off a boil of fiery southern blood on the magnolia-shaded campus today. Owens McCollum, business manager of the annual, dared Mr. Rose to “come down here and get an eyeful of real beauty.” . - In a voice quivering of pistols and the duelling oak at dawn, Mr. McCollum declared, “the trouble with Mr. Rose is he’s been looking at legs so long he wouldn't know a shapely body or beautiful face when he saw one.” Mickey Walker, interfraternity council president, allowed that “Billy Rose is all wet.” And several sultry-eyed “you all” beauties volunteered that it was “the lights and makeup that makes Mr, Rose's

Mississippi State Challenges Billy Rose to Beauty 'Duel’

Editor Sackheim proposed a duel on the stage of the Diamond Horseshoé, presumably at Rose's expense —with coeds competing against professional performers. “We'll match a complete musical comedy revue against him and leave the public to judge whether we have anything to show,” Mr. Sackheim vowed.

LILY SALE PLANNED TO AID CRIPPLED

Booths will be located in downtown stores and buildings Saturday for the sale of Easter lilies by the Marion County Society for the Crippled. Mrs. Ann Abbott is chairman of the booth committee; Miss Ruth Hyatt, co-chairman, and Miss Fay Schantz, chairman, lily committee.

PLAN FOR BURIAL OF 2 UNKNOWN SOLDIERS

WASHINGTON, April 17 (U, P.). ~The world war I unknown soldier who - lies at Arlington National Cemetery may be joined by two unknown buddies of world war II— one from the European theater and the other from the Pacific. The senate military affairs committee yesterday approved a proposal to return the body of an unknown veteran from each war zone for Arlington burial with appropriate ceremonies, The house recently approved a bill to return the body of a single veteran, without reference to war theater, The senate committee, at request of Senator Edwin C. Johnson (D. Colo.) amended it to provide for onored burial of one American soldier from each theater,

As announced by Mayor Tyndall in a closed session more than a month ago, the “contributions” would be used to elect Republicans in the 1947 mayorality election. “The methods have been set up to audit and bank the funds,” Larry Parsons, city personnel director and keeper of the “trust fund,” revealed today. G. 0. P. Finances, He reiterated that the “donations” from city employees would not be used to nominate City Hall selected G. O. P. candidates over the regular county Republican organization on May 7 “or in the general election this fall” “The money would be used to finance Republicans running against Democrats in the mayoralty election,” he stressed. “More than $15” already has been “given" and word will be circulated through the dusty corridors that this G. O. P. elephant is ready to be fed. Although it is generally understood among city employees that the Mayor would frown upon any who do not contribute, many persons indicated that they would not give. City Controller Roy E. Hickman, who gazes wistfully at the office on the second floor of the City Hall, has urged his constituents that the G. O. P. in 1947 should be prepared to “replace our administration with the type of people who will carry out the post-war program.” The mayor at times has spoken of keeping Indianapolis’ $25,000,000 post-war improvement program in-

—We, the Women. Parents Don't: “Admit Children

Geton Nerves By RUTH MILLETT A MIDWESTERN couple recently offered to give away their three children—two, three, und four years old—because, they said, the children | made them “nervous.” Perhaps the young couple didn't

times when their small-fry make them nervous. Perhaps they thought their own case was unique. ® 8 =» IT WOULDN'T BE surprising if that were true. For parents don't,

their own kids get on their nerves. They may tell how Johnny beat his little sister over the head with a baseball bat—but in the telling the story becomes funny instead of exasperating, and the parents’ outraged reaction to the assault: is never mentioned. And there seems to be a conspiracy among those who write advice for parents to ignore the fact that Junior just might possibly be a nuisance at times. All the dope parents get is on how to keep from making Junior a bundle of nerves. It is never admitted that, come Junior's bedtime, it is Mama who is likely to be tied up in knots, 8 » » . MAYBE GRANDMA'S kids didn't make her nervous. Or, if they did, she was free to chase them out in the yard to play, without worrying about any resulting complexes. But today's parents are all too often shut up: with their small children in cramped living quarters, and hounded by the modern ideas that they must answer every child's question, however silly, and that the kids’ development will be retarded if they can’t turn the living room chairs upside down. So, of course, the grown-ups get nervous. But, fortunately, most parents never dream up as simple a solution to their problem as that of just
