Laudable Talent Shown in Technical High School Play

By HENRY BUTLER

The 1946 senior class of Technical + high school last night gave the third performance of their senior play, “The Saturday Evening Ghost.” The final performance will be at 8:15 p, m, today. Produced in the fine little theater in Stuart hall and directed by Evelyn Kletzing, the three-act Tom Taggart comedy has good moments, Like other local high school shows, the Tech senior play shows lots of talent and effort. Under the limtations imposed by the choice of play, the young people did a swell job.

The absurd plot concerns the renting of a haunted British castle by an American manufacturer and his family. By his own admission, the ghost (William Mayes) ceased haunting the castle more than once a week back in 1778. He still has plenty to do, - however, especially with a lively and skeptical American family, including the obstreperous twins, Pet (Barbara Dearing) and Sonny (Neil Redmond). Spooky and zany events begin in the first act. Conventional hauntedcastle proceedings are interspersed with efforts by Mrs. Otis (Marilyn Mundell) to arrange a match between her older daughter Virginia

locally as a talented and graceful dancer) and Lord Archibald Archi. bald (Eugene Crum). All these things, including the valiant efforts of Mrs. Umney, the housekeeper (Joan Sheppard) to

great energy and enthusiasm. Last night's audience enjoyed the play. They knew the players, and they got a big kick out of the more lively antics, That's what high school plays are for, Years ago, I was in two or three just as remote from current reality as “The Saturday Evening Ghost.” " And so if I raise a question, I'm not criticizing the Tech seniors or their director. The question is this: is it better for youngsters to put on exotic shows or American shows? Kids love to play English lords, Scottish earls, Arabian sheiks, and so on, knowing, like the rest, of us, next to nothing about those characters. Everybody, including the audience, has lots of fun, ; But the net gain, in artistic achievement, may seem small, Like the radio voice of Drew

tion. Indianapolis or out-state high school that puts on the first really fine production (play, ballet or musical) with a genuine Hoosier theme will get national recognition.
