| Twenty-five per cent of the homes {needed "to house veterans will be | completed by the end of 1946, ac{cording to an estimate of Otto G. | Fifield, Lake county contractor, Addressing the annual dinner { meeting of the Construction league | of Indianapolis last night at Hotel

A Linegin, he sald the majority of

these homes would be of the prefabricated type. | Most of them will not contain | many of the innovations of the {building trade, he said, and many of them will be “merely expedients” to alleviate the present housing | shortage. Cost Less Than $6000 | william E. Mohler, president of the league, said projects were presently under way in Indianapolis to build more than 100 homes. of the prefabricated type. He said these would average five to six rooms and sell for less than $6000. The lots, averaging 50x100 feet, | would be included in the price. GARDENING:

By MARGUERITE SMITH | CONFRONTED WITH A PROBLEM vard, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cottey, 3054 N. Drexel ave, put their ingenuity to work to make it attractive. Four years ago one side of the front yard was nothing but cinders, Mr. Cottey said. Packed tight by automobile parking it couldn't support any grass. On the other side soil from a two-foot bank washed down in every rain as water drained from the higher lot next door. Now their lawn inclosed by a neat picket fence. Flowers grow in till in both sunny and shady spots. They even have tucked a small rose bed into the back yard, accenting it with a gazing ball, and set it off with small picket fence corners. Their lot is only 40 by 140, but they have two grape vines. Trained on a trellis beside the back walk the vines take ltitle room. One, a white variety that yearly yields over a bushel of grapes, was almost dead when they took it over. They pruned it severely and nursed it to present health. Some 17 rhubarb plants along the fence provide plenty of sauce and pies. " » »
