PRISON AWAITS SLAYER CONVICT

Stephenson Given Life Term In Raeber Robbery.

Preparations were being made today to take Eddie Stephenson, 36-year-old diminutive holdup man, to the Indiana state prison, where he will begin a life sentence for the murder of William Edward Raeber,

East side grocer.

A criminal court jury. deliberated only a short time and returned a verdict of guilty of first-degree

murder against . Stephenson. was found to have killed Mr. Raeber in the commission of a robbery, which charge provides only the

first-degree penalty.

Earlier in the trial, Stephenson's attorneys had attempted to enter a plea of guilty to second-degree murder. The state agreed, but only on condition the defendant would

name his accomplices.

The robbery-slaying occurred last Sept. 12. Witnesses said three men were involved. Stephenson, however, steadfastly insisted that he had not been there and consequently could

not name accomplices.

The grocer was alone at the time of the morning attack, He was shot fatally, but managed to crawl outside his store, where a passerby

found him,

Yudge William D. Bain also sentenced Stephenson to 10 to 25 years on a pending charge of robbery. The defendant was arrested two weeks

Sleet and Snow Hit Central, Southern Indiana. (Continued From Page One)

said the combination of wet snow and sleet with the sub-freezing temperatures indicated that some

_|vegetables, such as carrots, cabbage,

and radishes, were “frost bitten.” They said the damage probably would be scattered throughout the state “and would not be evident until two or three days later, Many Hoosier cities reported subfreezing temperature readings. The

, minimum temperature at Indian-

apolis during the last 24 hours was 30, Angola 27, Ft. Wayne 28, Marion 26, Terre Haute, 32, Hammond 28 and Cambridge City 28. The weather bureau said northern Indiana missed most of the snowstorm which left central and south~ ern portions of the state covered with a thin film of snow this morn-

ing. Rising temperatures had melted most of the snow away this morning.

Today's forecast: “Fair and warmer today and tomorrow. Clear and cool tonight with temperatures near freezing,” By 11 the mercury had rallied to 45 degrees and was still climbing here.
