| AUCTIONEERS | PLEA REJECTED

Hoosiers’ Prison Sentence In OPA Case Upheld.

oe BY DANIEL M. KIDNEY iio Tinmes Staff Writer WASHINGTON, April 12—Attorney General Tom Clark informed Rep. Robert A. Grant (R. Ind) to- | ; day that the two northern Indiana | : © auctioneers sentenced for OPA vio"lations must serve at least onethird of their terms before clem-| ency pleas can be considered. They ane Harold M. Steiner, plymouth, and Jonas A. Miller, Wakarusa, (both sentenced in the| federal coury when prosecuted by Alex Campbell, Ft. Wayne, federal attorney for the northern Indiana district. Steiner drew an 18-month sentence and Miller a year and a day. They are serving time at Terre Haute. Governor Ralph Gates, Senators willis (R. Ind.) and Capehart (R. Ind) joined Mr, Grant in asking President Truman for clemency for them. All these pleas were passed = on by the White House to the'S Justice department. { In a letter to Mr. Grant today,| ttorney General Clark said this) case must follow the rule which re-| quires that after serving one-third |= of their sentence the men can ap-|S pear before the’ federal parole = boagd and plead for clemency. He will recommend to President Truman that no further action be taken at this time. Nor does Mr. Grant intend to further press the case, he said. The President has the power to waive the rule and free the men. | But it is considered unlikely that he will do so.

LIKENS WASHINGTON TO WAR CONFUSION £

Robert E. Brown, Republican congressional candidate, compared the confusion in Washington to that which existed in the war and in the German occupation! as he spoke before the Warren and Wayne townships Republican clubs. “I do not claim that I can remedy the confusion in Washington,” | . Brown said. “I do think I can probably be at home in it.” ‘He declared that there is nothing = in the nation's capital more con-|= fusing than the situation when = Von Rundstedt came through the = 106th division. The candidate was = a gunnery officer for the only in- . fantry regiment that got out in! the 106th. Mr. Brown traced his activities| in Republican work and in the army, as compared. to those of his! opponents for the nomination.
