P.).—Allied sources indicated satisfaction today | with the first free election in Japan’s history as official and semiofficial tabulations of 30,000,000 | votes continued to roll up a siz- | able majority: for four conserva- | tive parties. The latest semi-official count for | the 466 seats in the diet's lower | house gave the Liberal party a lead | with 135 seats, the Progressives 95, | the Social Democrat 87, the CoOperatives 16, Communists five, Independents 89, and minor groups 36. Of the total, 373 are new mem- : bers and 22 are women. | A source close to Gen. Douglas | MacArthur said the supreme commander was expected to issue a statement when the tabulations are complete, complimenting the Japanese on the heavy balloting. ! Briton Impressed | W. McMahon Ball, British' Com'monwealth member on the allied council, said he was impressed by the “earnest and efficient manner” in which the voting took place. Meanwhile, right wing Progressives said they would support ore ganization of a new party of diet {members to back a reshuffled coalition government. Takao . Saito, party spokesman, |said that the Progressives were | ready to support any administration |or party—including the government {of Premier Baron Kijuro Shide- { hara—reflecting the will of the | people. Saito’'s comment came on the | heels of his own election by a wide | majority and followed announce{ment by Chief Cabinet Secretary | Wataru Narahashi that the government was planning a new party “to stabilize the political situation.” Both Liberal and Social Democrat party members were reported opposed to the move. A Social Dem{ocrat spokesman said the plan | “doesn’t deserve the party's consid- { eration.”
