Braves, s Long For

Manager South

worth Wistful

As He Reads How Cardinals

Have Two for Each Game

EVANSVILLE, Ind, April 9 (U. P).—Manager Billy Southworth of the Boston Braves was wistful today, but he couldn't help it. He is plagued with pitching troubles, which would be bad enough if he didn't have to read the accounts of how his team of last year, the St. Louis Cardinals, are performing even beyond best expectations. While Cardinal Manager Eddie Dyer has two top flingers to use

in every game, Southworth wonders whether he will have enough to

start the season. Morton Cooper, who he hopes will be his ace, returned to the team yesterday after an absence of nine days and still has to prove that he is in shape. Cooper said he pitched 27 innings while’ away on a business trip to Kansas City, Mo., but he has yet to show Southworth that he has conquered arm trouble,

Nominates Beazley

FT. WORTH, Tex. April 9 (U. P.)~Manager Eddie Dyer of the St. Louis Cardinals, riding high with 19 victories in 23 games, today named his sophomore ace Johnny Beazley to pitch the season opener against Pittsburgh, provided the youngster passes his “physical.” Beazley was sent home to St. Louis to have his arm and tummy looked after by Dr. Robert Hyland, club physician. If Hyland pronounces Beazley fit, the Nashville, Tenn., speedster takes over as the ace apparent of the staff, a role he enjoyed in 1942 when he won 21 games. Beazley pitched a fourhitter his last time out without bearing down.

Gordon Back

NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 9 (U. P.).—The New York Yankee lineup was taking shape for opening day

today with Joe Gordon back at sec-

ond after recovering from a spike wound to his hand and with Nick Etten on first after a business trip to Chicago which kept him away

several days.

For Their Friends

LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 9 (U.P). —Two Boston Red Sox youngsters

who got off to a good start in Louis-

ville turned in superlative work before old friends yesterday in pitch-

ing a double-header victory, 3 to 2 and 2 to 0 over the Cincinnati Reds. Dave (Boo) Ferris, ace of the Red Sox staff last season, twirled a steady eight-hitter to win the opener, but rookie Mel Deutsch outshone him by giving up only four hits in the second game, Bobby Doerr’s double and homer scored all the Boston runs in the opener.

All Is Forgiven TULSA, Okla, April 9 (U. P.).— Forgiveness was in order today for the wayward boy of the Browns, shortstop Vernon Stephens, who has gone a long way toward atoning for a prolonged holdout and a tourist's trial with the Mexican league. Stephens drove in the winning run for St. Louis in a 1 to 0 pitching battle with the Chicago Cubs yesterday with a single which scored Al Zarilla in the sixth, Sunday he hit a homer as a pinch hitter,

Clerical Error? OKLAHOMA CITY, April 9 (U. P.) —President William Benswanger of the Pittsburgh Pirates said today that his club knew nothing about Pitcher Harold Erickson, whom the Cincinnati Reds said he had claimed on waivers. Benswanger sald the mistake apparently was the result of a clerical error in the National league offices in New York. At Louisville, Ky, officials of the Reds said that Erickson would stay with the club and that the Pirates apparently thought they were‘claiming Pitcher Paul Erickson of the Cubs.
