Shiostly Marital Mixup Is
Delightful
By HENRY BUTLER From “The Royal Family” to “Blithe Spirit” in one evening is a little journey -calling for Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration.” Elvira, the blithe = spirit, had “materialized” by the time we got to the Civic theater, and was doing her blessedest to gum up Charles Condomine’s home life, It's fair to say that Elvira (Helen
Buell) carries most of the show in|
the Noel Coward comedy now at the Clvic. Mrs, Buell made a big hit with last night's audience. The moral of “Blithe Spirit” seems to be: If you're a re-married widower, don't participate in a spiritualistic seance, Charles Condomine did, and was he sorry! First Wife Returns For his first wife, Elvirg, came back«visible and audible only -to him. She started friction right away between him and Ruth, his second wife, When the ghost of a first wife returns, haunting and fishing for compliments, there’s bound to be trouble. When said ghost gets the notion that her erstwhile husband would be better company as a spirit than as a mortal, she can do plenty. Elvira tinkers with the Condo~ mine car, hoping Charles will use it first. Ruth beats Charles to it. First thing you know, there are two blithe spirits, complete with powdered hair, eggshell-pancake faces and diaphanous grey draperies. Efforts to rid the house of the two long-winded, reminiscent varmints demand high-grade spiritual=

Slows Up in Act III
Although the play tends to slow | Gun
down in act III, it's excellent entertainment, The Civic, as usual, does a fine technical job, especially with things like the bric-a-brac-smashing in the final scene, when the two ‘“de-materialized” blithe spirits are irked by Charles’ farewell. You can trust Noel Coward, the impeccable peccadillo-satirizer, to turn up a lot of stuff about minor marital delinquencies. Both wives are a five-letter word, which one of them mentions, but the second fis more conventional. Winifred Skyrme, as Ruth, playing opposite Hal Hawkes, as Charles, has the right accent and the right troubled genteel femininity, with malicious undercurrents. But Mrs. Buell, who has to flit, spiritwise, about the stage throughout most of the play, deserves ‘highest praise. “Blithe Spirit” is a tough job to produce. It's a tribute to, Jack Hatfield and his players to say that the job is superbly done. The play will run nightly at 8:30 through next Thursday. Don't miss it.

You have to hand it to the Athenaeum Turners theater for being ambitious. Last night, Norman Green's capable group of amateurs put on “The Royal Family,” the KaufmanFerber comedy about a theatrical family. : That play's no cinch. energy, acting, timing. To begin with, the setting, representing the Cavendish family’s duplex apartment, was good enough to call forth enthusiastic, applause from the opening night's regrettably small audience. In “The Royal Family,” things start happening right away. You get a wonderful pageant of scrambled events in actors’ lives—irregular hours, meals when convenient, family and professional squabbles and the conflict Gwen (Vivian Beane) has to face between loyalty to the theater and love for Perry (Roger Beane). Dominates Family Fanny Cavendish (Sylvia Kitchen), the matriarch, dominates the family, enforcing loyalty to the stage | and the Cavendish tradition. Her

Even a slight acquaintance with { people in show-business makes you appreciate the crazy logic of the Cavendish clan. High living, irresponsibility in some things most of us consider important—sure, But
that consuming passion for the!"
stage is something most of us can grasp only imperfectly. Repeated Tonight Among outstanding performances last night were those of Emily Barton and Fred Linke as Kitty and Herbert Dean, with their amazing bickering. Jack Messmer did a convincing portrayal of Oscar Wolfe, the manager, and Marie Hosford certainly looked the part of the
| impressive actress, Julie Cavendish.
