Two centers—Kirshbaum and Hill —spelled down their groups until they had a winner and runner-up who will compete in the semi-finals at Shortridge. No events will be held at those places next week.
At Kirshbaum the winner was Marilyn Kelly, School 27, and the runner-up was Mary Lou Miller, also of School 27. Hill's winner was Esther Warren, School 26, and second was Laura Birdwell, St. Rita (east branch) Catholic school.

represent Washington township in! the semi-finals at Shortridge, The event was to be held at the John Strange school. Other township! finals are listed for next week. All townships have been instructed by the Marion county school board to have their winners selected by next Friday. The 42 winners in the 21 districts of the city will be in the semifinals with the 18 winners representing nine townships. A group of the best spellers will return to Shortridge April 26 for the second semi-finals which will determine the 20 best who will compete in the Grand Finals May 3 at Shortridge. | Champion to Washington The Indianapolis champion se- | lected May 3 will receive valuable awards as well as every one of the 20 finalists. The champion will go to Washington, D. C., with all expenses paid by The Indianapolis Times to compete in the national spelling bee
May 23 to 26. The champion also will receive a 17-jewel gold wrist watch suitably engraved on the back and a gold “champion’s” pin to wear. Second place winner will receive a gold Eversharp fountain pen and pencil set and a sterling silver pin. Third, fourth and fifth places will get an Eversharp pen and pencil set plus suitable pins and all the other 15 finalists will be presented with contest pins. The last entries received for this year's spelling bee came from the following, who will compete tonight at the centers listed. These are in addition to some 1500 whose names have already appeared in The Times for matches throughout Indianapolis this week. : =
