AUGUSTA, Ga, April 5 (U. P). =—Byron Nelson, . of Toledo, 0., still was rated the favorite today to cop first prize money of $2500 in the 10th playing of the tough $10,000 Masters’ tournament here although his par 72 in the first 18 holes of play yesterday left him strokes back of the leaders. Nelson, suffering from a sore wrist for the past couple days, said his arm felt better now and he expressed confidence that he would get back on his game and catch up with Herman Keiser, of Akron, O., and Chick Harbert of Detroit, who blazed the trail on opening day with three-under-par 69's. Kaiser and Harbert, however, think shat if the strong wind that hampered play yesterday dies down they may do even better today, explaining that their games were the national , course. Their sparkling playing yesterday increased to 59 the number of times 70 has been broken during 1820 rounds of play in this select tourney. Ben Hogan, leading money winner of 1048 and co-favored with Nelson before the tournament started, had little to say after his 74 but Hogan, like Nelson, is one of the great finishers in golfing history. Of the three other pros who! broke par with 71's in the first round, Freddy Haas Jr. of New Orleans, Toney Penna of Cincinnati and Vie Ghezzi of Knoxville,
Penna .was considered the one
darkhorse’ with. a chance of crashing through. ' Begides Nelson, Johnny Bulla of Chic#go, Jimmy Thomson of Los Angeles and Carey Middlecoff, amatewr from Memphis, Tenn. equalled par for the first 18 holes of the T2-hole event, and the long driving Thomson and Bulla are both known to be tough competitors, especially in a tournament of such: high tension as this one.

MEXICO CITY, April 5. (U. Lively Session
liveliest general convention in the history of the American Bowling Congress wag expected to develop today when 35 proposed amendments to the constitution and rules come up for a vote on the floor, Two of the most important proposals, elimination of the “alley man” rule and suggested A. B. C. sponsorship of all individual and doubles tournaments, were tabled by the executive committee yesterday. But although the delegates to the general convention usually respect the committee’s recommendations, all indications point to a strong floor fight to bring up both proposals for a vote, There is strong pressure to abolish the 25-year-old “alley man® rule which limits one professional bowler to a team. Louis P. Petersen, Chicago bowling promoter, has proposed a major league of two teams from each of the following cities, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Chicago, Toledo, Buffalo, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Detroit,

Gilmer Passes
Army Induction
ANNISTON, Ala., Abril 5 (U. P.). —Alabama’s hopes for another outstanding football team in 1946 dropped appreciably today when quarterback Harry Gilmer passed an army physical examination and was told to await induction soon. Gilmer, a star passer who was named on some all-American teams, spearheaded the undefeated Crimson Tide to a Rose Bowl bid last season, and then led Alabama to victory over Southern California. His loss is the second within a week for the Alabama eleven. End Rebel Steiner was inducted Tuesday.
