” NUERNBERG, April 5.— Field - Marshal Wilhelm Keitel today at-|
tempted to shift blame for the execution of escaped RAF prisoners. to Adolf Hitler, testifying he did not even know they had been shot until several days had elapsed.
Keitel told the war crimes court .
that when he heard of the executions, he went to Hitler and “told
him my opinion in extreme disgust”.

He said it was a “very unpleasant case, since it was the third mass &scape in a very brief period.” He said he had decided not to mention the escape at a midday briefing. But during his regular report, Gestapo Chief Heinrich Himmler appeared and personally reported the incident. “There was a tremendously ex-

between the fuehrer and myself since he raised the most violent accusations,” Keitel said. Prisoners Were Shot “During this heated clash, Hitler stated excitedly that these prisoners of war were not to be returned to the armed forces but to the police. “I objected, and said this procedure was impossible, but Hitler gave a stern order that Himmler and I were to ‘retain these prisoners—hang on to them, don’t give them up’.” He said Hitler did not give the execution order in his presence, but “the thought that they would be shot during an ‘escape’ was on my gonscience.” After the prisoners were shot, Keitel said, Hitler ordered notices of the execution posted in the camp “to scare the other prisoners.”
LIBERAL VIEW CLUB LICENSE SUSPENDED
The Liberal View League club on Bluff road was under a 30-day liquor permit suspension today on an order by the Alcoholic Beverage Commission. In a statewide crackdown on violators of liquor regulations, the A. B. C. ordered two other permits revoked and a dozen more sSuspended for varying periods totaling 190 days. The local club was charged with selling liquor after the legal closing time. Permits revoked were those of George Crump, New Albany, who was charged with selling to intoxicated persons, and Chris Papadakis of East Chicago, charged with employing women as bartenders. The permit of John Davis and Basil Burton, 1328 Bates st., was suspended for 15 days on charges of Sunday liquor sales and selling whisky on a beer and wine permit Edward Eberhardt, 1040 S. West st., wag placed under a five-day suspension for sale to an intoxicated person.
