ENTERS RACE IN 4TH DISTRICT

Ralph R. Roberts of Rockport Now House Employee.

By DANIEL M. KIDNEY . Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON, April 4—Ralph R. Roberts, Rockport, has filled as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for eighth district congressman, he announced here today. A long-time employee of the house of representatives, Mr, Roberts has been chief doorkeeper since February, 1943. He succeeded to the post upon the death of Joseph Sinnott, who had been a house employee for more than half a century. Besides having charge of the several hundred house employees, Mr. Roberts has the duty of proceeding down the aisle and announcing all distinguished guests on the house floor when joint sessions are held with the senators. He is the second to announce on the Democratic side, subject to the primary May 7. Winfield K. Denton, Evansville, announced previously, Mr, Roberts toured the district recently making a survey of his political chances. He reports that the Democratic organization leadership in eight of the 11 counties in the district are for him. Included in this support he puts Vanderburgh county's Democratic chairman, Charles Eichel. Counties he listed as not committed are Crawford, Perry and Posey. A son of Judge R. E. Roberts, Rockport, Ralph retains a law partnership there with his father, He was born at Rockport, Oct. 16, 1897, and educated there and at. Indiana university. Owns Farms He enlisted in the marines in world war I and served in the AEF. He was Spencer county Democratic chairman in 1923 and is a post commander of the Rockport American Legion post. Mr. Roberts has been a house employee, first minority then majority, since 1922. He studied at the National University Law school here and was admitted to Indiana,

court to practice. He owns and operates several farms in Spencer county and specializes in production of beef cattle. Having served at national Democratic headquarters and attended every national Democratic convention since 1928, Mr. Roberts was doorkeeper at the Chicago convention in 1942.

EVANSVILLE LAUDED IN SAFETY CONTEST

Times Special CHICAGO, April 4 —The National Safety council today awarded the city of Evansville honorable mention on the basis of efforts to promote traffic safety, Wichita won first place in the 100,000 to 250,000 division, in which the southern Indiana city was placed.

48 states as participants, in addition to 1382 cities, and covered the year 1945. The state of Iowa won first place in the mid-Western states division, in which Indiana competed.

HOOSIER HIGHWAY TOLL IS UP SHARPLY

Indiana's traffic toll continued to surge upward last month when 83 persons were killed in 71 fatal accidents, Col, Austih R. Killian, superintendent of state police, reported today... The March death toll represented a 41 per cent increase over the 59 fatalities reported in March last year, Mr. Killian said. Motor collisions in February accounted for 69 deaths. A breakdown of statistics showed 27 multiple collisions caused 34 deaths in ‘March. Twenty-six vic tims were pedestrians, 12 died in seven . railroad crashes, seven motorists were killed in cars that ran off the roadway and two victims were bicyclists! One victim's car overturned in the road and another person met death in a noncollision accident.
