WILL BE TRIED
Authorities Differ on Blame
For Lax Treatment.
The criminal ‘court was expected to set a trial date today in the case of a 17-year-old youth charged with a series of burglaries that resulted in his arrest for the 1lith time, The youth, Donald G. Greer, 509 Abbott st, was arraigned Tuesday in juvenile court. Jurisdiction in the case was waived to the higher court. Meanwhile, a difference of opinion developed between William Remy, safety board president, and juvenile court ‘authorities over whose fault it was that the youth was released a number of times without punishment. Mr. Remy and police often have criticized Judge Mark W. Rhoads
“and his four referees for being too
lax in the treatment of’ repeated offenders. Criticism Exchanged This time, however, juvenile court authorities insisted they could not accept full responsibility, inasmuch as the Greer boy was released five times on order of the juvenile aid division. This agency is a part of the police department and under jurisdiction of Mr. Remy’s office. The safety board. president was quick to point out that four of these five times the youth was released by J. A. D. it was before the present political regime. Records show that since Judge Mark W. Rhoads has been on the Juvenile court bench, the Greer boy has been arrested five times, including the present case. Three times he has come before juvenile court, twice charged with theft and once with drunkenness. Sent to Boys’ School Once judgment was withheld. Another time, the youth was placed in the county jail and later turned over to Johnson county authorities. They sent young Greer to the Indiana Boys’ school. Last month, he was fined $5 in juvenile court on the drunkenness charge. Last November, however, Mr. Remy's juvenile aid division released the youth after police had arrested him on a larceny charge. Young Greer's career in crime began in 1939. He was arrested on a vandalism charge and released by J. A. D. He was picked up a month later as a runaway. Again, J. A. D. released him. In April, 1040, the 17-year-old was arrested on a burglary charge and released by J. A.D. A month later, he was charged with the same offense and again released by J. A. D. In 1941, the-youth was made a ward of the county welfare department, In 1942, he was brought before Judge Wilfred Bradshaw, who was juvenile court judge at the time. Young Greer was charged with truancy, but freed. The same procedure was repeated a month later. Then, the political administration changed.
