CS THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES . Former Herron Pupil

Ninth Anniversary

Fred Holt.

By BARBARA SCHAEFFER: THE PERSONS who lived in Balmoral court on N. Meridian st., eight or nine years ago, may remems ber a quiet, almost shy, little girl who was one of ‘their neighbors. : She wore her hair in long, brown braids that were as neat and trim. as the blazer jacket which topped her school uniform —the outfit .she wore to classes at Tudor hall.

Her name was Diana Denny and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwell Denny, lived in Balmoral court while Mr. Denny was editor, from 1935 to 1939, of The Indianapolis Times.

Today Miss Denny is 21 and the

John Herron Art museum is displaying a group of her drawings—38 caricatures of famous persons. She is now staff caricaturist for the Scripps-Howard newspapers and the drawings at Herron were done for the papers. » n ~ DIANA'S INTEREST in art was well-rooted even when she lived here, It may have been inherited from her mother, who iz an ardent antique collector. At any rate, while the Dennys were here, Diana and her younger sister, Alice, went each Saturday morning to the art classes at Herron. Miss Rosemary Cruzan, a senior art student (now an art teacher at school 8), gave Diana special painting lessons at home, too. At Herron they remember Diana as.a particularly industrious pupil who, despite her quiet manner, asked plenty of questions and made rapid progress in her studies. #” . » THREE YEARS ago Miss Denny enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, after studying a year at Rollins college. By last spring she had completed a four-year course and also received her master's degree and the Cresson scholarship for a year of art study in Europe. Before being shipped here, Ler exhibit of caricatures was shown at the Pennsylvania academy.
