Mrs. Minnie Belle Mitchell smiled for she was discussing her favorite subject, a childhood friend named Jim, : Fondly - she caressed a bulky manuscript. Mrs, Mitchell, who only admits to being somewhere in her eighth decade, thumbed the pages of a 60,000-word volume she recently finished writing. The title page reads: “James Whitcomb Riley Knew Him.” A Texan by birth, ‘Mrs. Mitchell came to Greenfield to live with relatives when her parents died. Here

Hoosier Authoress to Publish Stories of Girlhood Friend

here in my book.” This is not the first of her works for in 1942 she published “Hoosier Boy—James Whitcomb Riley.” This is a collection of tales of the poet's boyhood from the time he was born’ in a two-room log cabin until the day his father, Reuben, came home from the Civil war a captain. Another book, “Gray Moon Tales,” appeared a few years earlier and is-a collection of stories on the South. It is illustrated by Hoosier artist Will Vawter.

WASHINGTON, April 2 (U. P.,| —A high education official predicted today it will be civilians, not veterans, who get crowded out next fall when there aren't enough colleges to goraround. Women, especially, can expect to be disappointed, said Dr. Ralph McDonald, executive secretary of the department of higher education of the National Education association. Dr. McDonald said about 300,000 G. 1's are currently enrolled in 1700 colleges with total enrollment of approximately 1,300,000. During the war the college census dropped to 825,000.
