1946 Ripples’
Program 'Swell Show.’
By HENRY BUTLER A big crowd was up at Broad
see “Ripples of 1846." Parking was at & premium, but
lights . and illuminated batons helped people find places. The sehoel gym was packed, as well it m ht | 6. "Ripples of 1046" is a swell sho At times at show goes areun and above the best profession standards, just as some of the other Indianapolis high sehool shows have done. It's hard to explain, but youngsters have, in addition to that terrific energy (part fed with malts, hamburgers ph candy bars), the spark of imagination. And last night that spark jumped a lat of gaps. Parody on Radio Psobahly the hest item on last night's menu was Act II, “On the Al” a marvelous paredy of radia
studi, the skit had moments approximating genius. With’ Charles Jacobs as versatile - voiced announcer, the act tore inte what people endure an the air. If big-time radio people knew how some of their programs affect kids, they might learn sense. The Broad Ripple crowd certainly exposed a lot of nonsense, and did it well. One hig criticism, and this goes for all the high-school shows I've seen here: There should be mere cutting. That sounds kind of ruthiess and mean: But the cutting sheuld be dane hy a large committee of the youngsters themselves, not hy outsiders. Show's the Thing In all these shows there comes the problem of, say; Mary and her dance routine. Can't cut Mary out; she's good. Sure, she's gogd, hut the show's the thing. With ope eye on the show and the ether on # stop-wateh, a hard-boiled committee of student actors and producers could eut out a lot that slows down the whole production. I only wish there were space t0 mention names. In all these school shows 8 lot of youngsters do fine! getting adequate recognition. Maybe some gal on the stage does a good soft-shoe routine and gets mentioned. Maybe another gal, last chair in the second violins in the orchestra, has practiced weeks trying to play her notes and, of course, doesn't get mentioned.

program, was Robert Carlisle. That piano-playing, backstage and piped out front hy loudspeaker, was good. 80 was the playing of (last night) industriously gum-chewing Donald Shelhorn, last heard as one of two pianists with the Indianapolis Symphony orchestra's children's concert. The Golden Singers last night made 8 hig hit with their versions of “Deep in My Heart, Dear” and “Siheney,” in Act III. Goed voices, nice singing. Monkey Wows Audience Act IV, “Cannihal Cut-Ups,” with its (at the right eof the stage and genuine) monkey-husiness, wowed the audience. (Where'd they get that monkey?) Kisses Come To Jap | Films
Leading Lady Relustantly Bows te Democracy.
By EARNEST HOBERECHT Vinited Press Bla® Correspond TOKYO, March 30. — Japanese movie-gaers soon will witness the first screen kiss over filmed In Nippon—and I taught the leading lady, Miss Hideka Mimura, the finer points of osculation. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was responsible for the whale thing. He suggested to the Japanese motion picture industry that kissing scenes in movies would be a step toward democratization. "Big shots at the Shachiku studlo
groom's Troubles.” Everybody was happy but Miss Mimura, who said she would break her contract and quit the business. She Wasn't Joking She was not joking. A clinch hefaore the cameras definitely was not her idea of acting—and she is Japan's leading movie actress. Director Tadan Tanaka was upset. Shinichi Himori, the leading man, was upset. But Miss Mimura was in 8 state bordering nervous collapse. “I am worried,” she said. “I like being an actress. I like my job and 1 do not want to quit it. But Japanese movies never had kissing befare and I cannot ga through with it." “Not only have I never heen kissed in front of a camera,” she said, “but IT have just plain never heen kissed.” Thirty minutes later—with the aid of two dictionaries te eliminate any possible misunderstanding—she had convinced me that she had lived 35 years (28 by Japanese gcount) without having an amorous smack planted on her lips. Debt tp Democracy Well ‘remembering Gen. MacArthur's suggestion, I saw my obligation te democracy—and I performed it. I am new happy to report that the first Japanese movie with a kissing scene soon will he showing here.
The hubub sroused by the kiss still is rocking the studios and] movie officials. now realize that] henceforth 8 considerable period | must be allotted for the staging of a Japanese kissing scepe/ But at| least the ice is broken.
