Two generations ago that expressed America's warm welcome to immigrants who made the United States the fastest growing nation in the world. More than a million a year arrived in the period just preceding world war I. After that, however, immigration dwindled. In world war II it all but ceased. The immigration quotas, established in 1924, permit a maximum of about 158,000 to enter this coun~ try each year. : The quotas encouraged entry of northern Europeans—British, Irish, German and Scandinavian—and restricted those from southern and eastern Europe. Orientals and other “colored” races are barred, except for 100 Chinese a year. Rep. Gossett (D. Tex.) wants to cut these quotas in half for 10 years. His bill is before the house immigration committee. Substantial anti-immigration sentiment in congress is indicated by recent statements of various members. Several opposed a bill which uld permit some 300 natives of India to enter the coun-
