By PHILIP WECK United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, March 28—The state of Illinois today selected . April Fool's day as the date for an experiment intended to prove that Scotch whiskey made in America is as good as Scotch whiskey made in Scotland. The state liquor control commission on April 1 will go into Chicago bars, nightclubs, and cafes to conduct a blindfold test among the tipplers. Lucky people selected for the test will get a drink of American-made Scotch and one of the real thing. The idea, of course, is to see if they can tell the difference,

week effective April 1, according tol}
The liquor control commission is betting they can’t. Charles Fleck, chairman of the commission, said American Scotch is ‘at least as good as Scottish Scotch. “We've proved it by chemical tests, and now we're going to prove it by taste tests,” he said.
Mr. Fleck said he hoped to give the test to a good cross-section of the drinking public — professional whiskey tasters, veteran barflies, business drinkers, lady drinkers, social drinkers, and just plain drinkers. “They won't be able to tell the difference,” said Mr. Fleck. There's nothing wrong with the
Scotch whiskey being made in this country, ‘he said, but it isn't being accepted by the drinking public.
““That's. because of the labeling laws,” Mr. Fleck explained. At present distillers must label it as imitation Scotch or Scotch-type whiskey.” Illinois will change that law; he said, and be the first state to allow American Scotch to be sold as American Scotch. It's entirely a state matter, he said, because the federal laws don’t require the “imitation” wording. Scotch whiskey -differs-from bourbon and rye in that barley buds are the main grain ingredient. Scotch also is cured over open peat fires.

Lucky Ones to Get Free Drinks in Scotch Test
Barley and peat are available in this country, Mr. Fleck said. One distiller in<Peoria, Ill, has imported an entire plant from Scotland, brick by brick, and erected it over a peat, bog. - But the customers are slow to buy his Scotch because it's labeled “imitation,” Mr. Fleck said. “That's going to be changed, in Hlinois at least,” he added. “We'll prove that Americans can make better Scotch than- British. We'll even set higher requirements than the British do, more aging and more malt.” “If the other states follow our example, we might even cut off most of England's export of Scotch.”
