Owners May Obtain Loans, Remodel, Aid Veterans.
The Federal Housing administration will actively support a “Remodel for Veterans” campaign here, R. Earl ‘Peters, state director, announced here today. , : The campaign is in line with » national program to stimulate remodeling of existing structures to provide additional quarters for war veterans, Under the plan, Mr. Peters said, property owners may obtain loans up to $5000 for terms up to seven years. When eligible for FHA insurance, the loans cover properties in designated “war housing” areas, the improvements are to provide additional lving accommodations and occupancy priority is to be given to veterans of world war II Co-Operation Sought While facilities for home conversion and rehabilitation have previously been available, the FHA is now driving in critical areas to gain co-operation of communities, dealers and lenders as well as to gharpen the interest of property owners in providing quarters for returning servicemen. Mr. Peters pointed out that throughout Indianapolis and the state there are many older spacious and structurally sound dwellings. It is the purpose of the campaign to have owners remodel to provide one or more income-producing apartments in these structures, also to have large apartments in other buildings remodeled to provide a larger number of smaller units, Warehouses, business and other non-residential structures may be
speedily and profitably reconverted|fneq in with successive two-inch |“tree” in her front yard. “When
into ving quarters under the FHA Mr, Peters said. To further the drive Mr. Peters has urged institutions to join in an active campaign of newspaper advertising and other media.

THE NERDINGS believe in buying rose bushes as near home as possible. The plants are likely to be better acclimated, They also prepare their rose beds and places for climbbers ahead of planting time so the ground can settle, With a special drainage problem in our rosebed, located at the bottom of a hill, Mr. Nerding prepared it deep, put gravel, tin. cans, and other drainage material in the bottom. He filled it in with a mixture of top soil and cow manure. They also use about a handful of wood ashes to a hill and think it is important to spread roots carefully when planting. They are. specially fond of floribundas, the large flowering cluster roses. These slightly taller bushes they use at the side and end of the bed of hybrid teas.

HERE'S A home-of-the-month which copes with present costs because of its simple design and compactness. Although it provides the greatest amount of living space for the lowest cost, the design avoids the rubber-stamp monotony of run-of-the-mine low cost housing. The house has been selected by Practical Builder, a Chicago trade publication of the industry. The plumbing is in one wall and cross ventilation is provided in all rooms. The plan can be varied to a story and a half by moving the linen closet into the bathroom and installing a stair to the second floor. This arrangement would provide space for a den, large bedroom and additional bath on the upper floor. The living room with dining alcove is well designed for furniture placing and will accommodate full-sized dining room table | and chairs in the alcove. Corner | cabinets provide space for linen | and dishes. In the simplified kitchen ar- | rangement, the space beneath the | corner cabinet—which usually is |
