PETIOT SAYS HE NDED REFUGEES

Alleged Killer of 26 Says He Contrived Rescues. By JOSEPH W. GRIGG

United Press Staff Correspondent PARIS, March 20.—Dr, Marcel Petiot testified at his trial for killing 26 persons today that as a wartime patriot he master-minded an underground railroad system by which refugees form the Nazis were spirited away to France and Argentina, Composed and almost smug, Petiot told the assizes court on the third day of his trial that at least

tims -actually got to Buenos Aires. Chief Justice Marcel Leser asked | Petiot about a Jew named Gusshinow, first on the list of 26. How, he asked, did the Svengali-eyed doctor account for the fact that Gusshinow disappeared after. visit ing Petiot’s sinister house on the Rue Le Seuer in 1942? Disappear Frequently “Well, people do disappear quite frequently, you™ know, in these | times,” Petiot retorted. Unburdened of his quip, he told how Gusshinow asked him for help | in getting out of the country. He {said Gusshinow stayed overnight | with him, then left by way of Spain. Later, he said, he got a letter from Gusshinow from Buenos Aires, Again Petiot tossed in references to his “secret weapon,” which he had said would kill a man at 30 yards. He told Gusshinow, he said: “If you go to New York and enlist in the Free French forces, please call on the state department and ask them about my secret weapon, because I want to know whatsthey are doing about it.” | Asked by. the prosecutor why he| killed the mistresses of his victims, | Petiot said, “Well, what the hell else | could you do with them?”

TRAFFIC VICTIM DIES DECATUR, March 20 (U. P.).— Alpheus N. Acker, 86, Pleasant Mills, | died here yesterday of injuries received when he was struck by an automobile driven by Ellen Schumm, 20, Wilshire, O., Monday as he ‘crossed the street in front of his home.

Joins GOP Ranks

Abandoning the independent organization his brother had tried to develop into a powerful third party, Senator Robert M. LaFollette has officially led his Wisconsin Progressives into the ranks of the Republican party. He de« clared, however, he still would fight the GOP's “Old Guard.”

5 NATIONS OFFERED UNRRA MEMBERSHIP

ATLANTIC CITY, N. J, March 20 (U. P.).—Invitations were on the way to Turkey, Argentina, Syria, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia to participate in the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation administration. While the UNRRA affairs committee voted unanimously to invite these five, all members of the | United Nations oganization, it | pointedly ignored membership re-| quested by Russia-backed Albania and U, 8. backed Siam. Neither is a member of the United Nations. Albania was opposed by the western powers which believed UNRRA membership might be an opening wedge for its participation in the United Nations—with a consequent |sthengthening of Soviet Russia's {growing eastern European voting { bloe. Siam was dropped because of French opposition,
