By MARGUERITE | ory SO YOU'RE TRYING to start a little early garden on that nice clay sub-soil from your basement excavation? Or more likely, you're finding it's still too wet to crumble when you apply thé time honored test of squeezing a handful, and you can't even begin to spade. That's the kind of soil H. H. Bauck, 8101 Broadway, had four years ago. To judge from an exca« vation near his home, his description of it as “pasty, stiff and miserable” is an understatement. But he’s really got his problem licked. Last year he raised good string beans on his clay when many a gardener found it “just too wet for beans.” And the Baucks' speck of a strawberry bed produced ‘gallons and gallons of berries.” Here's how.
» » - THOSE WHO are really successful gardeners, Mr. Bauck has noticed, pay a lot of attention to their soil. It's the most important point in having a good garden, Even if you start with the “good sandy loam” invariably recommended, “you can't just take out of the soil year after year, maybe give it~a little chemical fertilizer now and then and expect it to stay in good condition,” he says. Soil needs organic material so that it will hold moisture and be loose enough for air to penetrate. After various experiments Mr. Bauck is convinced that the “organic gardeners” have the right idea. He does not, however, as they do, exclude the use of chemical fertilizer altogether,

Two meetings on Financing the Home—the fourth session—will be held at Manual high on Tuesday night and at Crispus Attucks on Wednesday. The speaker will be Pred T. it on top of the ground and let it alone to decay and that suited me fine. It's a means of keeping the yard clean for one thing. I put everything on that compost pile “My experience with burying {leaves taught me that I should not let the pile get too compact, for the leaves did not decay well when they were matted together. So on every 2 or 3 inches of rubble I put a thin layer of clay. That kept odor down, weighted down

AIDS IN RIDDING TERMITES GIVEN
Expert Says Not to Worry About House Falling.
It's termite time , . . but don't let it worry you. Your house won't fall down as a result of an “attack” by the insects that bore into the wood, says Frank Wallace, Indiana's entomologist. He does warn, however, that if there are termites in the house something should be done to get
“rid of them. As a preliminary mea$-
ure, he suggests that specimens be saved when insects are believed to be termites. These will permit the “termite man” to determine if they are the wood-eaters or some other insect. Mr. Wallace suggests saving the termites in alcohol Qr other preservative or just bottling them up in a dry container, Termites on Decrease There are as many termites in Indianapolis as there were 20 years ago, Mr. Wallace reports. He said wider use of concrete and the resultant decrease in wood content of the house -is-largely responsible for the fewer insects, And, says Mr. Wallace, Indianapolis hasn't been infested any more than other citfes—and not as much as the southern communities. Warm weather brings out the termites, because they mate in the spring season. There isn’t anything that draws the insect to any house except their search for wood upon which to feed. If they don’t find it outside, they go into the house. Mr. Wallace doesn't subscribe to a theory that houses without foundations would have more termites than one with a foundatian. He says the only hazard there would
