night. The occasion was the world premier of Elizabeth Trotter's dramatization of Booth: Tarkington's famous novel, ,
vitational affair for Civic theater members and guests, regular run will open tonight, Time has lessened the pathos of “Alice Adams.” It's a little difficult | now to recapture the attitudes| which made Mr. Tarkington's novel so admirable a satire on snobbery. And while the imaginative girl and her socially ambitious mother still provide good dramatic material, world war II, the housing shortage, women in industry and other factors make the story seem less effective. Society just isn’t what it used to be.
Setting True to Life Granting the changes time has wrought, “Alice Adams™ still fur!nishes good entertainment as a play. That implies a big and sincere! compliment to the Civic theater l actors and technical staff,

RAY ROBBINS IS FEATURED AT ROOF
Ray Robbins and his Californians will be the week-end’s musical attraction at the Indiana roof. Playing tonight, tomorrow night, Sunday and Wédnesday, the band is headed by the N. B. C. singing star who has been heard with Gus Arnheim, Al Donahue and others. Mr. Robbins also worked with Bing
“Alice Adams” is as fine a thing as you've seen all season at the Civic. He's got the look, almost the odor, of some shabby old house in,
with gosh-awful wallpaper in the living room (it must have been ‘fun painting that hideous stencil on the flats). And the dining room, with some of the orneriest shin-barking furniture I've seen since 1912, is a perfect background for the famous dinner. “Warm Weather” Dinner The dinner, incidentally,” is an episode in which Mr, Tarkington reached an almost Dostoievsky intensity. As you recall, Mrs. Adams’ {menu for a warm summer evening

included such items as hot soup, chili con carne and Brussels sprouts, “Alice Adams” .has probably injured the Brussels sprouts industry in the United States. Last night's audience gave a lot of well-deserved applause to Helen Morton as Mrs. Adams. She burned up countless kilowatt-hours of energy making a foolish, ambitious and tactless woman, come to life on the stage. Mrs. Adams carries the show. Her pre-dinner, proud maternal monolog to Alice's temporary beau, Arthur Russell (Eddy Hinkle), is one of the play's big moments. Mary Hall is a personable and convincing Alice, even though she gives the impression of being fundamentally too sensible for the difficult role. Katherine Hepburn, if you remember the screen version, got more starry eyed nonsense into the part. Portray Pather, Brother Earl Davis as Virgil Adams, Alice's father, does an excellent portrayal of a worried and almost beaten man, And Eugene Thomas as Walter Adams, Alice's cynical and wayward brother, is a plausible young heel. Miss Trotter's play shows a good {sense of values. There are times, | | especially in the second and third acts, when you could wish for more condensation.
