Prisoners Find It ‘Decent Way of Living.
By DOROTHY WILLIAMS United Press Staff Correspondent ' FT. BUSTIS, Va, March 7.-The Germail In the black prisgner of war uniform stood béfofe thie hiige American flag and told how. he felt, about democracy, Hé called it a “way of living of practical, decent and successful
people.” It's the way, he said, of people who believe in the dignity and rights of all men regardless of their origins or abilities. He was a youngish man—just past 33—dark and soldierly tall. He talked in quicky vehement German to the nearly 1000 other war prisoners and the handful of U. 8. &rmy men who made up his audience. It was easy to imagine him in his pre-war role of a Rhineland high school teacher-<he had spurned a university post because it méant he would have to join the Naz party. Learn About Democracy After about two years in captivity he was speaking for himself and those other Germans, summing jup what he had learned about democracy during the months behind the barbed wire of an’ American prison camp. f “Now we understand that to live and work togethier successfully men . +» + must be able to make an agreement peaceably,” he said. The speaker was from a selected group of German war prisoners— by the end of March they will total nearly 22,000 — being “graduated” here from a special course in the democratic way of life. He was addressing their “commencement” assembly. On him, and the other thousands specially trained before they return to Germany, the army is pinning its hopes for the development of a better Germany and a better world. The army has been educating them for the past 18 months In |what makes America tick. Capping this training is a six-day intensive course here, with the men plasing through in groups of 2000 per week Believe. Trials are Justified
Days are. given over to lectures, aducational films and discussion There was the section, for instance, that whS discussing the trials of the War criminals at Nuernberg. They told their instructor, Capt. Henry A. Meyers, a Madison, Wis. attorney, that they felt the trials were justified because the accused had “made slaves out ‘of foreign
