By ROBERT C. RUARK Scripps-Howard Staff Writer NEW YORK, March T7.—A lady we know, who has never been to a cocktail party for a celebrity, requested that she be allowed to take in the Von Johnson shindig the M. G. M. people were throwing at the Waldorf before Mr, took off for the coast. She said she {figured she might as well start at the top. The party began auspiciously. Going up in the elevator, the operator chanted softly: “This is the fourth floor, this is the Perroquet room, and all these nice people are going to see Van Johnson-n-n-n-n,” in a quiet baritone. This lady fought through the throngs which were choking the entrance, hopeful of seeing the great man. She remarked cattishly that she was certainly going to plant a garden, in her old straw hat, because everybody. there seemed to have half-an-acre of roses, violets or pansies growing over the left eye, All Don't Wear Bobby-Sox

She remarked that Miss Adrienne Ames was wearing lilacs in her hat. | “And they look like she sewed them on herself,” this lady said, viciously. Inside, it became apparent that all bobby-soxers do not wear bob-by-sox, The ladies in mink were {crowding Mr. Johnson into a corner {with the same deadly female in- | tensity of the 14-year-old jitterbug, |and waving pencils with the same | frantic hope. “We sent telegrams to the people {we 'wanted,” a publicity man said, {“and we hoped that way we could {keep the yucks out. But we got the yucks, anyhow.” | “Why do you bother with these things at all?” the lady asked the {publicity man. “It must cost a

| suite and buy all those drinks,” Drinks 3 Pints of Milk | “Because we love you,” said the | publicity man, gazing morosely into his scotch. | Mr. Johnson, during the party, consumed three pints of milk. “He's serious about milk,” the publicity man said. “He loves milk.” “Well, it certainly isn’t doing his {figure any good,” the lady, plainly {in a captious mood, remarked. “He's (going to have two definite chins {very shortly.” Over in the corner, a little girl of | some 11 or 12 years was sipping neat soda and swinging her legs violently, while she gazed adoringly across the room at Mr. Johnson. {The lady who had -the child in | charge took a deep pul] at her mar-

‘He Eats It Up’

“I just hate being a proxy mother.” The little girl kept swinging her legs. | Mr. Johnson, trapped in a corner by photographers, was" busy trying] |to dissuade a girl reporter from | making the trip to the coast with {him today, in order to get an ex- | clusive interview. He was wearing a blue suit which collected lint, and he smiled broadly, constantly. He {had small bags under his eyes. | “He loves this," a man said. “He eats it up.”
