Rate Goes Up Up 49 Per Cent Over Last January.

CHICAGO, Feb, 28 (U, P)~— American motorists started out 1946 on an “inflationary market of death” with the third greatest number of accidents of any January on record, the national safety council said today. FAMED NAVY DOCTOR TO END SERVICES

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (U. P.. —Capt. Corydon M. Wassell, the heroic navy doctor who won fame early in the war, was back in Washington today to end his navy career. Capt. Wassel won the navy cross and was commended by the late President Roosevelt for caring for wounded survivors of the cruisers Houston and Marblehead and safely evacuating them to Australia ahead of the advancing Japanese. Capt. Wassell stayed behind with his men when the last American ships evacuated from Java. Capt. Wassell, 62, yeported to the nearby Bethesda naval hospital upon his arrival here yesterday from Key West, Fla, He expects to go before the retirement board Monday. Yet only 28 years after the death of Mother Cabrini she has become the first saint from the United States. That is perhaps a record in all church history. Mother Cabrini was an Italianborn nun who founded the Mission ary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in the United States where she became a naturalized citizen. Twenty-eight years is a long time to settle a case in law courts, yet so exacting is the church before canonization that in this case 20 volumes were filled in Sxemining every detail of her 67 years. .
