WHO WROTE TO ASK WHY WE CAN'T HAVE A NICKEL TRANSIT FARE RATE LIKE THE NEW YORK SUBWAYS’

That's a good question, and we'll try to answer it fully. New York's subway system is owned by the City, which established the 5¢-a-ride rate. That looks cheap until you discover that it is costing the taxpayers over $41,000,000 per year more to operate the system than is received from passengers. This deficit must be made up with dollars from the City Treasury (taxpayers dollars, of course). So, in reality, the low nickel subway fare is subsidized by the people them. selves who must pay higher taxes because of it. Indianapolis Railways is self-supporting. It does not get any taxpayers’ support. In fact, last year we paid taxes totaling $1,105,667, or more than $3,000 per day. A 5¢ fare in our City would put the Company out of business in short order. Because the number of riders has been rapidly decreasing since 1944 — while operating costs have been steadily increasing — the present 6%¢ token rate is plainly insufficient. Too, the Company is being asked to raise wages approximately $1,000,000 a year. The question is simply: Shall we have a token rate 124% 10 28%% lower than that of any comparable city baving a self-supporting transit system, or shall we have a bigher token rate that will permit this Company to give our citizens the modern transportation service they want and deserve? Tu 7945, Operating Costs Increased $842.87 a Day. Compared with 1944 Passenger Rides Decreased 9,708 a Day Compared with 1944 Sincerely, .
