By HENRY BUTLER Conflicting engagements evidently kept a lot of the regular Indianapolis Symphony audience away from Saturday night's concert at the Murat, There were plenty of vacant seats downstairs. Even late-comers; who trooped in after the playing of Aaron C oplands “Appalachian Spring,” didn't fill the orchestra. | The Copland work, originally written for a small chamber orchestra accompanying a ballet, is a good piece of descriptive music. With plenty of rhythmic variety (a lot of meter-changes that gave Dr. Sevitzky a workout) “Appalachian Spring” has some pleasing melodic lines and some highly effective harmonic eross-relations, On one hearing, the composition may not seem to merit all the prizes and etueal encomiums that have been heaped upon it. Liszt's flat piano concerto, an old pianistic war-horse, now adays seems somewhat broken-winded.

\ eok-End Symphony | Concert
‘fot course, prodigious. It had to be, for Mr. Barere sprinted through|:
the Liszt at a pace that seemed to make Dr.’ Sevitzky nervoys about attacks. : About 20 years ago, that concerto with its formidable opening (pum, pa, pum, pa, pum-pa-pa) struck me as pretty hot stuff. But the doubleoctave passage imniediately following, impossible to play at the Barere tempo: (Mr, Barere muffed some of the octaves, as any pianist would) iypifies the corniness of the piece. Even the lyrical passages of the concerto (three - four - six-flve-six-eight-two-three) are 10th-century sentimental swoonings, nowhere near the vigor of Gérshwin, Facility Demonstrated It takes an awful lot of work to learn to play as many notes per minute as Mr. Barere does. No doubt his tremendous facility comes in handy in mare Substantial compositions. But so far as the latest E flat concerto is concerned, an.expert with an ice-pick and a blank pianola roll could prépare to get all those notes played with far less effort, Dr, Sevitzky wisely chose the Brahms Fourth symphony to complete the program. That composition would sustain any program, Composers, like other artists, have often complained that what they. express is only a fraction of what they might express if life were longer and art were shorter. Compelling Symphony In the Fourth symphony, Brahms comes as close as any composer ever has come to expressing the|——— best in him. That is especially true of the last movement, the magnificent chaconne, which, like Brahms’ other theme-and-variations writing, is a mirror of his musical mind, It condenses his musical experience, so that you hear reminiscences of all sorts of things, from the “Pilgrim’s Chorus” to Strauss waltzes. The chromatic ladder of keys in the finale of the last rhovement is one of Brahms’ favorite devices for getting cosmic effects. Completely devoid of literary associations, the music becomes as compelling and relentless as the sweep of time and circumstance. Barring -some faltering in the French horns, the orchestra, under Dr. Sevitzky’s energetic . direction, gave an enthusiastic performance of the symphony,
