“10 FIGHT OPA
Landlords Say They'll Resist Cuts by Closing.
The Indianapolis Owners’ and Tenants’ League girded itself today for a sustained battle with the OPA to modify rent control to the point where landlord and ‘tenant could make private rental deals without interference from .the price control agency. . League Chairman Claude E. Booth, 875 Middle Dr., Woodruff Place, told a meeting of 26 land- | loids and some tenants at the Claypool hotel last night that present rent control operations are fostering a rental black market in In- | Organizer of the league here, Mr.
he formerly rented until OPA restored his rent cuts to the point where he could -afford to keep the dweling units open.
Believe in Control He made it clear that the pur-|
but to modify it so that “we owners can make a living.”
“We believe in rent control in| some form,” he sald. “But with a| little common sense.” ag He charged that when he pro- | tested to one rent control inspector that rent cuts would force him to close his apartments, the inspecior advised him “to go ahead and close them, OPA doesn't care.” Opposing moderation as the league's policy, Stanley Woodruff, 2325 Central ave, asked for outright abolition of rent control. Means to Close Up He said rent cuts he received just Wednesday left him with an income of only 71 cents a day for rooms he rents to 1: girls. | “That's what they're telling me I can do,” Mr. Woodruff shouted. “And I'm telling OPA they can 2) to hell. I'm going to close my place.” Other landlords present murmured | assent and applauded. | Chairman Booth predicted the! league would soon be flourishing nationwide with the aid of real estate boards and chambers of commerce.

REPORT PICKETING
State labor department author- | ities investigated today, at the order of Governor Gates, a report that pickets at the Hicks Body Co. at Lebanon had interfered with the business of a nearby filling station. Governor Gates ordered Labor | Commissioner Charles W. Kern to! conduct the inquiry. The governor said he was told by President Thomas Burrin of the Lebanon ‘Chamber of Commerce that trucks had been banned from entering a service station near the plant. i The Hicks plants have been | strike-bound since last November, | but a back-to-work movement Swol weeks ago brought about partial resumption of production. Picket lines were strengthened yesterday and no workers entered the plant.
