Kinney" s Hewaion Variety Mechanized at Circle. Don't deny that civilization is progressing. Even Hawaiian music is mechanized, as you'll find out if you hear Ray Kinney and his band, now at the - Circle. The Hawaiian guitar, with {its oily-syrupy up-and-down slides, has become an instrument (electronic, of course) that looks like a pinball machine from the audience side. Hula girls wear grass skirts made , out of cellophane, If that isn't progress, I don't know what is,

goes, hers is very good. What's more, she has good diction. As for the band, probably a whole generation is growing up with the notion that pineapple is a fruit re sembling a flat doughnut. In other words, the band is synthetic. It's Hawaii plus jive. Yesterday's audience liked it. Maybe you will too. What seemed far more amusing was the “Merry * Melodies” short that preceded the stage show. Somebody had a lot of imagination who put shoemaker gnomes at work to Tchaikovsky's “Humoresque” or scored the ornamental open-work on a lady's white sport shoe to Strauss’ “Voices of Spring” waltz—H. 'Harvey Girls' Is Pleasing Film At Loew's.
Of costume movies there seems no end. “The Harvey Girls” now at] Loew's, exploits the slightly novel angle of virtuous, strictly chaperoned girls in conflict with wildwestern éafe entertainers. Anyone who remembers the wonderful meals the Harvey houses along the Santa Fe used to serve

although the outfit sll has some good basses. Falsetto Technique The falsetto singing by the tenors bothered last night's audience at first. Convention decrees that males may sing falsetto only (a) if they're Irish tenors or (b) if they're cowboys. But the initial shock soon wore off, Maestro Jaroff, who evidently is gifted with absolute pitch, still does his picturesque stunt of walking through the formation (singers right- or left-facing) to give the key to his chorus. And he still ‘makes the most of his being the tiniest member of the outfit. I'm not a showman or an impresario. But it strikes me that the Don Cossack group should get away from purely Russian programs and cultivate at least part of popular interest in other things. Russian Cowboys The Cossacks, with the imprint of Tolstoy’s novel and with wide- | spread anti-Communist sentiment, seemed romantically fascinating 15 years ago. Probably even now in the U. 8. 8.
