stretching the rayon. A snag, of course, can often be stopped simply by pulling the offending loop through to the underside. Mending Tips Runs in places that will not show may be permanently sealed by “runstop” preparations, These preparations do not come out when washed, and are often preferable to sewing, which tends to lessen the stocking’s elasticity, ’ The best thread for hand-mend-ing is a raveling from an old stocking of matching or slightly darker shade. Stocking yarn is lighter in weight and thus less conspicuous than darning thread. If mending by machine, stitch on the wrong side with short stitches and dullfinish thread. Clothing experts at the agriculture department also list as reminders a few suggestions that every woman already knows. Rayon stockings,” for instance, survived longer if washed before being worn. Garter Runs They should always be washed carefully, using lukewarm suds of mild soap and tepid rinsing water. Squeeze gently and avoid pulling, twisting and wringing as rayon is weak when wet. Hose should be thoroughly dry before wearing. > Light - colored stockings, put away for next summer, should be rinsed occasionally during the winter to make them last longer, Many runs are caused by too much pull from garters or by cutting from rough metal garter grips. Elastic might well be substituted for the tape garters on many wartime girdles. Wartime grips of rough metal may be replaced by grips taken from prewar girdles, the specialists suggest.

Career Women Know
Tricks of Hair Dress
To make sure that hair is “squeaking” clean, use at least two sudsings: work the lather into your hair from the scalp all the way to its very ends. Just as important’for shining tresses is a truly thorough rinsing, If you are a business woman, do the job early in the evening, and try using pre-warmed towels to speed the drying. An extra precaution against catching cold, if you plan to

phones and as many clocks and daisies titled “He Loves Me, Etc.” One all-over design looked like a plain crockery mug—it was called “Drool Cup.”
Jive Division
In the Jive division were musical notes, phonograph records and even a piano keyboard—but just one song. ~“Chickery Chick” inspired a veritable chicken farm—they danced and hatched themselves and turned up in stylized design. We don’t know what inspired the egg with trousered legs—it was called “Wilbur, the Unhatched
“Hubba Hubba” (also spelled huba, haba and hubb) was spread across more chests than we bothered to count. And the fan clubs ran high with love letters to Van Johnson, “Oooh Frankie,” and more subtly suggestive bow ties. Dagwoods Prominent The food division turned up a variety of scda fountain confections, hot dogs and severe] varieties of Dagwoods. : One pound-conscious miss put marble slab goodies on her left chest with a “no” and a bunch of vegetables at her waist, labeled “yes.” The animal division, exclusive of chickens, showed a similar conformity to pattern—skunks, fish and wolves, with a scattering of puppies, a small, dreadful group of snakes and spiders, and some cats, whica perhaps should be classified under jive—they were all labeled: “hep.” Some of the youngsters did take their inspiration from school nours: They turned up with some fine U, 8. geography and lots of international{sm—One World, inter-American friendship and the UNO. There were a few geometery problems, one set of punctuation marks and some extra-curricular tick-tack-toe,

Don’t Use Weather
As an Excuse
Let us rejoice that simplicity is the keynote of the season’s coiffures, whether they be swirled in broad “ribbon” effects or twisted high in an Oriental knot. . But since the whole charm of these hair styles les in the lustrous gleam of the hair itself, don’t let cold weather be an excuse for postponing your at least-once-a-week shampoo. You know, of course, that you should brush your hair every night: An extra thorough brushing just before washing hair is important, this loosens old skin, dandruff, and dust, so that they can-be readily sudsed off.
