House Members.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 (U. P). ‘~Many house members showed in|’ creasing impatience today with senate delays in working out some plan to control development of atomic energy and protect the secret of the atomic bomb.
by the Canadian spy scare—despite
James F. Byrnes that the secret of the bomb still was the exclusive property of this country. Chairman Andrew J. May (D. Ky.) of the house military affairs committee said he may stop waiting for senate action and call for a house vote next week .on the May-Johnson bill approved by his committee last year. The measure would set up a nine-member commission to control development and use of atomic power in this country. The commission would be responsible to the President. Military men would not be barred from membership. The senate’s special atomic energy committee is still working on a bill but is far from agreement. One of the main points at issue is whether the control commission should include military men. Chair~ man Brien McMahon (D. Conn.) wants an all-civilian council. Rep, Ewing Thomason (D. Tex), a member of the house military affairs committee, expressed hope that the senate committee would come up with some plan soon. “If our (May-Johnson) bill is too militaristic,” he said, “let's have the McMahon bill, but let's have some action.” Mr. May told reporters that in view of the Canadian spy episode, he hoped Mr. Byrnes was correct when he said yesterday that the United States never had shared its atomic know-how with Canadas and
