Farmer Jones Wins Feature
Farmer Jones, Arkansas hillbilly, settled a score at the Armory last night when the bewhiskered rustic {took two of three falls from Gil La Cross, the “Boston badman” to win featured bout honors on the weekly mat bill staged before a crowd of approximately 3200 wrestling followers. The Bostonian handed Jones a setback here two weeks ago. La Cross threatened to repeat by taking the first fall after only two minutes when he rushed the Montgomery county grappler off his feet and clamped on a leg breaker, Jones staged a comeback to take the second session after 12 minutes with a bear hug and the final in 10 minutes with a “mule kick.” In other bouts “Gorgeous George” Wagner of Hollywood pinned Lefty Pacer of Cleveland after nine minutes with a flying headlock and press and Rene La Belle of Toronto flipped Buddy Knox of Tulsa, Okla. with a dropkick and press in 16 minutes.

Aces Play Sycamores Tonight’s action will be high-
lighted by Evansville’s invasion of Terre Haute to play Indiana State. Also on tap are Notre Dame at Michigan State and Indiana Central at Central Normal.
Evansville, paced by high scor-
ing Harold Brown, has lost twice to the Sycamores®and tradition says it's all but impossible to beat a good club three times in a season, If the Purple Aces win, it could mean the state championship.
‘Evansville now has won five out
of six I. C. C. starts and has only to get by second division Indiana Central in its finale. On the other
hand, Valpo's undefeated pace-set-ters have won four league games, but still must get by Indiana State. State, too, is in the running, with three loop victories in four games and two more yet to play.
Greyhounds Face Warriors
The Indiana Central Greyhounds will journey to Danville tonight to attempt to break even in a twogame series for the season with the Central Normal college warriors. The Central Normal five trimmed the Greyhounds in mid-December, 43-33, at Indiana Central.’ The Central quintet finally found itself Saturday night against Manchester and is hoping to hand the Warriors the same kind of prescription. It will be the last out-of-town trip for the Greyhounds this year. Their remaining game will be with Evansville in University Heights, Feb. 27.

it's all because of basketball. Mr Stranahan. And Mr. Stranahan O'Brien. :
up the argument from here.
By J. E. O'BRIEN OERCION—that’s what it is. Mr. Stranahan, the cooperator of this little place of basketball business, has been forced to pick New Castle. He knows that if he mentioned any other team, he would be blackballed from New Castle society and have his Henry county visa revoked.

erced. Of my own free will, § choosing obviously ¢ the best team im the state to win the state. Give me Central of Evansville, if you please, and you can have the other 775. I am picking Central, knowing full well that Bosse's state champions already have a sectional ambush laid and that the Bears’ jumping-jack forward, Bob Kohlmeyer, may be on crutches with a wrenched ankle until at least Saturday night.
But Cenwral’s assets still outweigh these liabilities. The Bears have shown stamina and an ability to fight back. They prefer to get under, rather than shoet out on the floor—and this means less chance for them to go “cold,” which often is a deadly menace to tournament teams. They devote a little more effort to defense than the run of 1946 teams, and I like that, too. One factor against. them in the tourney, I know, will be the shortage of losses on their season record. A team should suffer to be seasoned, and maybe the Bears haven't suffered enough. But that is a “handicap” the Bears must accept. » » » Maybe I shouldn't want the Bears to win, Things already have been bad enough around our house with Brother No. 3 on the squad, and the whole family transformed into a fireside cheering section. The last time I was home pennants already had replaced the living-room pic” tures, and a contractor was quoting his price on doing over the whole place in gold and brown. I strenuously objected when the Kid came to the dinner table one night dressed in his game suit. But worse than that, the entree tasted suspiciously like bear meat, which I thought was carrying school spirit a bit too far. All this, mind you, from a maternal parent who three months ago thought a per-

By BOB STRANAHAN IF Mr. O’Brien can go back .to Evansville to pick the 1946 Indiana high school basketball champion, there's nothing to keep Old Kunnel
from meandering’back to New Castle to get his winner. The old boy will be first to admit that there absolutely is no logic asses 10F DiS selection. The Trojans could even get bumped off in their sectional this week. Middletown could do it. Then if they get to Muncie for § the regional, they i will have to go all out against the Muncie and Richmond sectional winners. * It gets no easier in the semifinal, for the Green and White will be up against such possible worthies as Central or South Side of Ft. Wayne, etc. Then it looks like Chuck Stuckey’s kids will have to lick Lafayette and Mr. O’Brien’s own Centrals to win the title. » = ~ But, strictly on a hunch, the old guy once again has cast his lot with the Trojans. Hunches ‘sometimes are just as good as figures in this high school show. » - 5 New Castle isn’t a big team, and] most of tive dupesters say you have to have size to come through. But the Trojans have proven on several occasions this year that they have all the spirit and drive so essential to a champion. Anderson found out about that last Friday night, Lafayette’ not so long ago. Another bunch of New Castle kids had that same spirit back in 1932, They didn’t have a center that year to match Jack Mann or Jess McAnally. But they took the title
