Just looking at the Minneapolis orchestra on the stage, you get an impression of dignity and calm confidence. Few orchestras I've seen have seemed less hurried, leds worried. These 90 men and women from the larger Twin city are as studiously earnest and as readily co-operative as the members of a string quartet. Forceful Conductor Maybe that's the influence of Mr. Mitropoulos. He conducts as if the orchestra were a group of soloists. He brings out melodic lines in each choir as if he were conducting a much smaller, chamber-music ensemble. The result is sometimes extraordinary. Some critics might accuse Mr. Mitropoulos of overdoing effects.

neapolis Symphony's English horn, who had the stellar role. Darius Milhaud’s “Suite Francaise,” bottled in 1945, is not much more than another clever job of arranging folk-tunes. All those astringent dissonances: the unresolved sevenths and ninths and the not-too-painful cross-relations in harmony—make a pleasing background for unimportant melodies. Maybe one reason why the Minneapolis orchestra sounded so swell in the Indiana university auditorium is that the auditorium is well designed. As those on the inside repeatedly moan, nobody has ever heard the Indianapolis Symphony in the | Murat. If Bloomington can have such a magnificent auditorium (and nobody begrudges it), why not Indianapolis? With conventions, we could make it pay.
