operas, such .a$ Italian-style grunts and groans of tenors and baritones and the dreadful ham acting opera audiences endure for the sake of the music, \ The story itself is familiar enough. In modern dress, it becories more plausible. Music Carried Over It revolves about the character of
her lover-victim Joe. In Act II, scene I, Joe calls her a word that wouldn't get by the copy desk. By that time, you could somehow tell that the audience was thinking of the same word. People who haven't seen “Carmen Jones” will wonder how a great opera can be drastically adapted without damage. But the music carries over and becomes the background for a story much easier to understand—a story of passion and murder such as you might read in the paper. It begins to mean a lot moré than some musty costumeplece at the Met. Capable Cast It was a shrewd Billy Rose who sponsored this brilliant and fascinating production. Mr. Rose and his staff gathered a fine bunch -of singers, actors and dancers who make the revised opera a real musical show, and not just a museum-piece for lorgnette-wavers. Among the soloists, Muriel Smith as Carmen, Napoleon Reed as Joe and Elton J. Warren as Cindy Lou deserve especial ‘credit for last night’s performance. Old Bizet wrote music to suit himself and not to accommodate

soloists in a hard-working, traveling company. Those high B’s for the tenor are tough stuff. Consequently, the “Carmen Jones” company alternate some of their soloists. Fatigue in Evidence It's just as well, because there was some evidence of vocal fatigue last night. I wouldn't want to criticize, but I hope that what seemed to be the tiredest voice will get a rest tonight. The ensemble singing was fine. So were the costumes. (I want to be buried in a suit like John Bubbles wore in the last scene.) And the scenery, for a touring show, was impressive and rapidly changed. Some people might hope that Hollywood would do something with “Carmen Jones.” I hope Hollywood doesn't, for they'd sure as heck put a lady psycho-analyst into it.

Pacific Gag Book Issued
Jerry Colonna Treats Lighter Side of Island War
By VIRGINIA MACPHERSON United Press Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, Feb, 11.—A new book hits the ‘stands today—'Who Threw That Coconut!”—By googleeyed Jerry Colonna, no less. It's all about his overseas tour. And the fact that it started out to be about Mother Goose is something only “The Mustache” can understand. : . “It's simple,” he explained. T've always wanted to write. Once I wrote for the Saturday Evening Post—and they sent it to me.” That oughta give you a rough idea. “Who Threw That Coconut!” is straight out of a diary Mr. Colonna kept when he and Bob Hope were island hopping in the South Pacific. “We went from camp to camp, island to island, and bad to worse,” he quipped. “We saw a lot of blood and strain, but I left that out. Other guys can write that better.” Mr. Colonna concentrated on dishing out the delirium. He did a good job, too. : Long Planned Effort We read the “Coconut” and got involved in a tooth extraction on Tarawa, a plane crash in Austrailia, a run-in with the Bougainville native cops, a betel nut hangover, a command performance for a sturgeon, and an escape from an ice cream freezer, It has everything in it, in fact, except Mother Goose. “That's what I started to write a few years ago,” Mr. Colonna said. “A book of nursery rhymes with crazy punchlines. And with black mustaches on all the cows and pigs and even Mother Goose.” He was going to call it “Mother oose Goes to War.” Had a lot of zany ditties dreamed up about rationing and shortages and war nerves. Then came the paper short age. “I'm just a frustrated author,” {he declared. “So when I got back {from the Pacific with this diary I |re-wrote it into rhymes. Then I {took it to a publisher.” | The publisher thought it was a terrific idea. ‘But he said it was too short. “Told me people could pick the thing up off the stands and finish in ten minutes,” Mr. Colonna added. “And even I know you're not gonna make any money that way.” Stretched to 90 Pages So “he took his verses home, squeezed in a lot of gags, and stretched it into that 90-page book

down for any day now. His pal, Bob Hope, who dashed out a best-seller himself last year, isn't worried about Mr. Colonna as competition. “He's all for it" Mr. Colonna said. “Told me I could take Kauai, Noumea, Pitylu, and Nadzab. Said {he couldn't even take time out to pronounce them, let alone get. the spelling right.” So he did. And come next Thursday Mr. Colonna, man and mustache, will pull a switch and give his autograph to fans in a downtown department store: Provided, of course, they've shelled out a {greenback for his book.
